Interviews: Efeito Catarse

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock band, Efeito Catarse from Brazil. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): we wanted a striking name that represented something like an explosion of feelings and Efeito Catarse (catharsis effect) represents exactly that.

Renato Pepe (bassist and back vocal): I personally didn't like the name very much, I thought we could synthesize our concept in another way; but when we got on stage and let out all those emotions that we print in our songs, it was like a cathartic explosion in me! At that moment I realized that the band caused me a catharsis effect and then the name took on a new meaning for me.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): we identify with rock, especially rock from the 90s. Our biggest idols came from this generation, bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and other bands from the grunge movement. There are bands from here in Brazil, such as Legião Urbana and Titãs, which also have a strong influence on Efeito Catarse; it's worth the world to know more about our national rock besides Angra and Sepultura, which by the way is the favorite heavy metal band of Dave Grohl, it's kind of like Brazilian rock and grunge have always walked hand in hand hehehehe

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): Yes, we met at music college, then we formed the band.

Renato Pepe (bassist and back vocal): since then it's been about 20 years of friendship... We've shared bad times together... This generated a brotherhood, a very strong alliance that transcends to our music and makes us, in duo, work very well as a solid band on stage.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): we don't have a favorite band, we all like grunge bands, like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots...

Renato Pepe (bassist and back vocal): besides the Brazilian bands we mentioned, like Legião Urbana, for example.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): our composition process is very personal and individual, we are inspired by everyday themes such as violence, politics, depression... The song "Movimento em Vão", for example, is inspired by how the hegemonic media makes its cut of the truth and thus defines the daily life of the people; its representation of what our reality is can make us believe in a normal day or in total darkness. In short, all the anguish, joy, and other human feelings felt by the urban man, kind of inspire us to write.

6. Where was your last gig?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): Our last show was at a concert hall in São Paulo-SP, last month. Now we are in the process of structuring our careers to scale our reach in the market. Part of this is the internationalization that made us get here, in this incredible news portal of all musical worlds. When we announce our new schedule of shows, it will be something much bigger than what we have done so far.

7. Where would you like to act?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): we would like to play in several countries where our music can reach; we have a certain barrier that is our language - Portuguese is not the most commercial language that exists in the world, but we are managing to break through the Brazilian bubble little by little. According to the report of the new press officer, today we are already managing to enter with our work in countries like Spain, Italy, Peru and now here with you hehehehe.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): Maybe with Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam... it would be a dream hehehehe

9. Whom not?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): we don't have a band with whom we would refuse to play, even those that we are not fans of their music, maybe it can be a new profitable experience and we are always open to new experiences.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): it always gives that butterflies in the stomach when you go up on a stage… Only the years on the road give us the experience to overcome this fear. Basically, it’s to move on and face the fear

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): Currently, all the bands of the grunge movement, and also Queens Of The Stone Age and Red Hot Chilli Peppers

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): once, in a very energetic show, a fan asked me to give him my shirt, but it was my only shirt, I would be left with my breasts out hehehehehe, unfortunately, I couldn’t fulfill that request at that show.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): our fans like good old rock and roll, that has good lyrics, good themes addressed, good arrangement… and here at Efeito Catarse they find all that and well dosed from the old school with contemporary music.

14. What do you think of our site?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): wonderful! It’s a fantastic job, promoting bands that are looking for visibility in their journey!! Essential work for new and/or already established bands.

15. Something to add?

Rodrigo Gentili (vocalist and guitarist): We would like to thank you for the opportunity to grant this interview to you. It was wonderful!!! Keep up this beautiful work, as it is essential for all bands in the world! Congratulations!!
