Interviews: Leisure Hour
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Emo/Indie band, Leisure Hour from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Grace here, I thought of the name “Athleisure” originally, and liked the phonetics of it, but I didn’t want
the band to be associated with sports. I then found “Leisure Hour” which I thought accurately reflected
the mission of the band, which is to create a space of freedom and enjoyment through music.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We chose to make emo music because simply put, we thought that's what we'd be best at. We all have
loved the genre for a long time, from mainstream emo like Fall Out Boy and Paramore to more recent
underground emo like Modern Baseball, so that's something we all had in common, and figured we could
pursue that shared passion in our art.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
We absolutely did! Grace (our bassist) knew Isaiah (the guitarist) from high school. We didn't run in the
same circles but we were aware of each other. We became closer in college where we met Raegan (our
drummer) through the party scene. Years later we found ourselves in the same band together.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
Isaiah's is The 1975, while Grace's is One Direction and Raegan's is The Naked Brothers Band.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Intense feelings from important life events inspire our songwriting. We write about love, death, and
everything in between.
6. Where was your last gig?
Our last gig was in Bowling Green Ohio and it slayed. Catch us there again later this year where we'll
be playing day 2 of the DIY emo festival Fauxchella.
7. Where would you like to act?
We would like to perform anywhere and everywhere, from basements to stadiums. We found the band
drunk at a college party in a living room, and intend to continue the intimacy we've found in small shows
while scaling our attendance up to grow our community.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Uhm, as of right now we feel very eager to continue creating, but want to keep it by ourselves and our
producer Gary Cioni. I mean, we are big fans of Rock of Love, so I suppose if Bret Michaels wants to
feature on a Leisure Hour song he may.
9. Whom not?
We are definitely not interested in working with Bret Michaels.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
We definitely suffer from stage fright, especially when performing in a new circumstance like when
more people than we usually play to show up. We push through it by leaning on each other and focusing
on performing our art the way it deserves to be performed, which to us means loud, tight, and
emotional.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
In our current era, the bands that have inspired us most are Eat Your Heart Out, Beach Bunny, and
Modern Baseball.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Well, we haven't been asked a weird question, but once a fan gave us her old braces. She's 100% more
of a friend than a fan, as is the case with much of our community, but nonetheless, that gift was pretty
wild. We love it; we hang those braces from the mirror in our tour van.
13. What do you think of your fans?
The Leisure Hour community is filled with compassionate, vulnerable, ambitious people. We're
constantly surrounded by people that support, influence, and challenge us, which is something we are
very grateful for.
14. What do you think of our site?
Breathing The Core seems like a fantastic place to find up-and-coming artists. Love the death metal logo.
15. Something to add?
We hope our music changes you as much as it's changed us.
