Interviews: Modern Evils
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock band, Modern Evils from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or did it just come out like that?
Modern Evils’ name was formed as a response to the negativity people express towards any sort of ‘liberal’ movement which they perceive as ‘evil’, such as gay rights, freedom of speech, drag, and so on. We are a collection of those ‘evils’, and proudly so.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
As a band, we’ve always been known to never stick to one genre. All of us have different backgrounds, tastes, and influences, so each song tends to shine a spotlight on each member's taste and personality. We love whacky tempo changes, sounds of insanity, and anything that hasn't really been tried before and we hope you love it!
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Aaron and Sam actually go back the furthest, with both of them being part of the Army Cadets. Aaron and Meg met when they were 18 in a Swindon nightclub (not what you’re thinking). Sam went to school with Joe’s younger sister. Meg, Sam, and Toby have all known each other for around 6 years through the Swindon music scene. Aaron and Joe met working at a call center, where Joe worked in IT and Aaron sold travel insurance.
4. Each band member's favourite band?
Aaron - Knocked Loose
Meg - Linkin Park
Joe - The GazettE
Toby - Malevolence
Sam - Title Fight
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
We mainly pull from personal feelings and experiences. We’ll sit at band practice, come up with a theme or idea and within 20 minutes the bones of a song are made. As we are all very different, new songs can go from one extreme to the next in the space of a second.
6. Where was your last gig?
The Victoria, Swindon.
7. Where would you like to play?
Absolutely everywhere.
8. Who would you like to support?
Turnstile, IDLES, Biffy Clyro, Basement, Empire State Bastard, Touche Amore, Nirvana.
9. Who not?
We think we’d sound a bit weird with Tom Jones.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
At every show, most of us feel nervous about performing. You can't really stop it, but you can prepare for it. Practice your part until you can do it from muscle memory. On the night, remind yourself what you're there to do, take a few deep breaths, and force yourself on that stage. Insider tip - booze, a personal pep talk and picture the crowd in cow costumes.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Idles, System of a Down, Biffy Clyro, Basement, Title Fight, Turnstile, Limp Bizkit, Touché Amoré, Strange Bones, Calva Louise, The GazettE, Britney Spears.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Toby’s been asked for a ‘firm back rub’ in the past, that was pretty weird. (He declined). Aaron’s also had someone message the band directly asking him for his trousers.
13. What do you think of your fans?
We love everyone who takes the time to come and see us, listen to us, and rock out with us, whether they enjoy it or not. It’s always such a diverse crowd and we love that.
14. What do you think of our site?
It’s sick. It provides a great platform for up-and-coming bands from around the world, which is exciting. Also, love your extremely Metal logo, we like.
15. Something to add?
Everything’s all bangly dush, baby.
