Interviews About Albums: INTO THE DEEP - Blackfin (2023)

In this new interview, we sat down with the American Metal/Rock band INTO THE DEEP to ask some questions about their album "Blackfin"

1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?

We spent a lot of time setting up a recording studio in our practice space because we always felt like we could not experiment enough on our songs due to the time/cost issue of being in a studio without a producer. We have learned to produce and record on our own, and all ideas are tried before moving on.

This feels like the first EP that we are all 100% happy about. Getting to take our time and experiment has been key.

We wanted to create an EP that sounds more 'live' and less processed. In order to achieve this, we practiced a lot live, together, then recorded live when we felt it was tight enough. We bypassed sound replacement and quantization due to this, and now have a more natural sounding recording.

2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?

All the songs carry varying meanings, from very serious, to the absurd.

As a whole, the songs are about being burnt out and frustrated with society. Whether that be social, political, religious, or ecological. We humans seem to be our own worst enemy.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?

Mike composed most of the riffs, basic structure, and lyrics. Phil and Eric also helped to create the final songs with their drum, guitar, and vocal input. We work well together to create a final product. Eric created most of the riffs for the song 'Sandblasted'.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

Seaweed. It is the most unique-sounding song we have created yet.

5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD? If there is, what is it?

Hopefully, people can find something in the meanings of these songs that will let them know that they are not alone in their thoughts and feelings. We are all in the same struggle.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

I have two (Seaweed, Hammerhead) since they are so contrasting:

--Seaweed--

I have roamed the oceans for so long
Searching for a savior
Finding only outcasts in the dark
On a lost endeavor
From the canyons running we embark
Fill our heads with slumber
Nothing is more paramount
When oceans roar like thunder

And I wait for you in the weeds
Drifting down as I fall into waking dreams

I see myself in you parallels
Worlds of blurring colors
Lost planets spinning around the sun
We will face each other
Gravity tugs the moon and waves
Pulling us asunder
Leave what you know give in
There’s no need to hesitate

And I wait for you in the weeds
Drifting down as I fall into waking dreams

And In my darkest days
I found you
When all was lost
You came true

--Hammerhead--

Magnetic trails of ancient wisdom
Separate the living from the dead
Predatory marksman aiming
Lurking shadows overhead
1000 pounds of pure aggression
Purpose diluted in blood
Nocturnal stalker of ruin
Virtuous and cruel

Hammerhead busting loose
Left for dead split in two
You’re gonna wish
that you were dead
The depth they wait for you
Hammerhead breaking through

Unleashing primal condition
As the blade cuts you
Twisted logic, tradition
Will see the damage through
In this funeral procession
So ripe for the picking
Choking on draglines
With my teeth I’m sinking

Hammerhead busting loose
Left for dead split in two
You’re gonna wish
that you were dead
The depth they wait for you
Hammerhead breaking through

We watch their sons
They steal our young

And now the tables are turning
This grievance of morality
Construction of mens perversions
Dereliction and neglect
They are baited and waiting
Cutting eviscerating
The flesh no longer binds
The rest they leave behind

Hammerhead busting loose
Left for dead split in two
You’re gonna wish
that you were dead
The depth they wait for you
Hammerhead breaking through

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

I am mostly inspired by wildlife in the ocean, sky, or land. Animals are fascinating and an endless source of inspiration. I find the simplicity of their existence beautiful and wish we as humans could be better global custodians and learn from their examples. For us and for them.
