Interviews About Albums: Spook The Beast - Guided By The Second Sun (2023)

In this new interview, we sat down with the Canadian Doom Metal/Sludge Metal band Spook The Beast to ask some questions about their album "Guided By The Second Sun"

1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?

We’re all very stoked to share it. It’s the continued evolution of the band and our music. Unlike the period around our first EP "Where All Things Die" when we were still early into our friendships and partnerships, we are now more settled in and comfortable with each other - which I feel is reflected in the boldness and confidence of this EP.

It also marks the first recording with Keith, and wraps up Greg’s drumming contributions to make way for a clean creative slate for Michael.

2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?

Alex was the one to come up with it. It harkens to the cosmic and gravitational pull that brought this band together on our current trajectory. It also brings together the overall theme that great forces act upon individuals and influence how they react and behave - much like the massive gravity of a star.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?

Alex is the principal contributor. He's prolific and constantly has riffs to share. He introduces song concepts (sometimes almost complete songs) to the band and we collectively arrange and revise until we come to common ground.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

My pick would be SHAMAN. I like the slow build and the vocal exchanges between Alex and me. The pacing combined with the dense instrumentation makes it heavy and complex.

5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD? If there is what it is?

Despite our assertions and learnings, we are not in control of our destinies.
Also, I've hidden a lyric in plain sight that only 80s Saturday Morning Cartoon babies would pick up on.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

SHAMAN SHAMAN SHA-MAAAAAAANNNNN

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

We were driven by the impetus and energy of our first release "Where All Things Die". We discovered a creative force and wanted to keep riding that wave.

8. Something to add?

We're stoked to showcase these new songs live starting with our EP release show on September 29th at the Dive Bar in Waterloo with ABSORB and DEAD KARMA. Keep an eye out for more announcements this fall and the new year.
