Interviews: Dismal Crux

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Blackened Doom Metal/Heavy Metal project Dismal Crux from Spain. Check out this project and follow him on his INSTAGRAM PROFILE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

It's a combination of two ideas, the first one is the word “crux” which means “cross” in Latin. When I was growing up my grandma's house was full of catholic icons, saints, and pictures like one of Jesus holding a burning heart, and it used to freak me out, so the name's a catholic thing, The second idea is more of a literary concept, I knew there had to be fantasy and epicness in the lyrics, as I love heroic fantasy and all that geeky stuff. So “Dismal Crux” in this case means the horrid (“Dismal”) crucial point (“Crux”) of a story. I liked both ideas and there was nothing on the internet with that name so I took it.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

I used to play in a stoner band, but my passion since I was 14 or so is metal, but I don't like really modern metal stuff, 80's, and 90's metal is my thing really.

3. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Like I said, dark fantasy literature, but also the occult and random gruesome real events and crimes that I pick up from here and there. Occasionally the lyrics are about existential or personal life experiences, but I made the decision from the beginning that I didn't want to moan about my problems like a lot of bands do, I rather take the role of narrator.

4. Whom would you like to feature with?

That's easy, Ozzy. But I'd also love to collaborate with Darkthrone or Sodom, two of my favorite bands.

5. Whom not?

I don't know really, anything metalcore/emo or ultra-technical modern progressive wouldn't work for me

6. Have you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Yes, I've been struggling with anxiety problems since I was 18 and had a few years of drug abuse. It's better than it used to be, but it's one of the reasons why I have this studio one-man project. I'm not even planning to play live, I don't know if I ever will again.

7. What bands have inspired you the most?

Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, Sodom, Cathedral, and Blind Guardian, to name a few.

8. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

I can't think of anything really... A woman asked me to take a photo with her after a concert once. It's the only thing that comes to mind.

9. What do you think of your fans?

I don't have many. Maybe after this interview, I'll get a few!

10. What do you think of our site?

I think you do an invaluable job supporting small bands like Dismal Crux and for that, I am very grateful as I'm sure many others will.

11. Something to add?

Just that at the moment, you can download Dismal Crux music free of charge from Bandcamp. You introduce 0 when selecting the price and the download will be available.
