Interviews: Maverick

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Punk Rock band Maverick from Canada. Check out this band and follow them on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?

We wanted something that made sense. Something that would be representative of us, of what we do. As the definition (plus the origin story behind the expression) of a maverick goes (an unorthodox or independent-minded person. /...that does not carry a brand. ...also used to describe a person who acts free from constraints or organizational guidelines.), all punks have this ‘’maverick seed’’. To us, it is the very definition of a punk.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

It’s what we love the most. It just comes naturally.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Negativo. I (Eddie) have had this project, officially since 2017. I met with Fil, Elliott, and Mike this year, at the jam space we share. We hit it off right from the start and Maverick was up and running again, ready for live appearances.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Operation Ivy, Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold, and Pink Floyd.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

There are so many bands and artists who influence us, from all around the world. We can’t cease to be amazed by the great artists we keep on discovering, old and new. It’s however safe to say that we’re mainly influenced by the East Bay punk scene from the 80’s and 90’s. When it comes to writing, many things inspire us. Personal stories, goofy things, just ventilating or writing from the heart. Really, whatever pops up from within.

6. Where was your last gig?

We played this great gig at Traxide, one of Montreal’s greatest underground venues. We played along with the very talented and promising bands Bad Objection and Killer Doctors. We had loads of fun, as usual.

7. Where would you like to perform?

Everywhere haha. For us, 924 Gilman Street is obviously THE destination. It is such an emblematic venue in the community. It would definitely be wild to play there.

8. Whom would you like to perform with?

Operation Ivy, if they ever do a reunion tour.

9. Whom not?

There’s not really any band we wouldn’t want to play with. Unless it’s one that has sketchy lyrics and advocates violence and unhealthy behaviors. You know what I mean.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Oh yeah, almost every time haha. The cure is quite straightforward: give your attention to simple unimportant things that are in your sight. Keep your mind busy. Until the moment comes when you have to go on stage, then you really are too busy checking if everything is ok to be feeding the preshow stress.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

That one is impossible to answer. However, for the sake of argument, if we all were to agree on one and only one band, we could say Queen.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

In the punk community, bands and fans stick together. So there’s not really that sort of aura per se, that would make someone approach us in a weird kind of way.

13. What do you think of your fans?

They Rock! Obviously haha. Honestly, though, they’re super. Always very pleasant and knows how to throw a great party.

14. What do you think of our site?

Oh, it’s awesome man! Everything you guys put together, bands from all around the world, and links to awesome playlists. So much music, and so many bands to discover!
