Interviews: Semprus

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Technical Death Metal band Semprus from the UK. Check out this band and follow them on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or did it just come out like that?

Travis: I always wanted a one-letter band name, and I also wanted it to start and end on the same letter. A name has to be unique so you stand out, so I made up the word after watching Harry Potter, as one of the spells says “Sempra” and then I thought of Semprus.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Travis: I just love heavy music, I feel it offers so many opportunities to express different emotions. It's the most sincere out of any genre I think.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Travis: I knew Aidan (Guitarist) from college for quite a few years before the band, and I knew Fabian (Bassist) for a little while also. I met Harry(drummer) in university while I was studying music production. He had asked me to be a vocalist for his band, but I told him I was too busy with Semprus, at that time we needed a drummer, So I Uno reversed Card him and asked him to come play drums for me, which he did. Stavros (Guitarist) contacted us when we put out an advert for a second guitarist. We have now been in this lineup for almost a year. 

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Fabian: Metallica

Travis: Nine Inch Nails

Aidan: Deviloof

Stavros: Between The Buried And Me

Harry: OldWharf

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Travis: I write about emotions, I feel things deeply, and write the music to make a sonic picture or some kind of physical manifestation of what I am feeling. In my eyes, a successful song is one that has made me get over what I was writing about.

6. Where was your last gig?

Travis: I'm pretty sure it was B1 Brickmakers in Norwich when we were invited to guest headline metal to the masses final. It was a great sold-out gig!

7. Where would you like to play?

Travis: I would love to play The Underworld in Camden more than anything, I think it's such an iconic venue, and would be a dream to play there, like some of my favorite bands have.

8. Who would you like to support?

Travis: A big dream would be to support Thy Art Is Murder. But right now I've been obsessed with this band Heriot and would love to do something with them. 

9. Who not?

Travis: To be honest we are so small I would support anyone, even Taylor Swift haha.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Travis: We all suffer with it, but you just gotta know that once you are on the stage, you are god and people are here to see you. So you gotta give them a show.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Travis: So many, I can say for definite our first EP Desolation was just a Behemoth and Thy Art Is Murder rip off haha. We take anything on as inspiration, Especially from bands that are far away from us in sound, like NIN and Radiohead.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Travis: Probably a setlist, because we don't expect anyone to ask anything from us ha, so we are always surprised when they do.
