Interviews: Sleep In Motion

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Alternative Rock band Sleep In Motion from the UK. Check out this band and follow them on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or did it just come out like that?

Ryan: So me and Alex were in a band together previously and originally this was going to be a side project for a little bit of fun while we were touring. On the tour we were on, one of the guys in the crew was complaining saying to us that he couldn’t sleep in Motion while travelling. It soon became clear that he was the first one in the bunk every night and did an incredible job keeping the rest of the band and crew up with his snoring! So it kind of just stuck and that was that really!

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Ryan: In fairness, we never set out to play a particular genre. We just got together to jam some of our favourite songs and at the time we were just playing Nirvana tracks and punk covers in a studio. When we started writing our first EP we leaned into the grunge side of things but now with the album, we definitely took a sharp turn towards the metal route which is more of what I grew up listening to.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Alex: I met both Ryan and Lewis through music. Lewis and I met through a mutual friend when I contacted him to see if he knew anyone who wanted to get together and write/perform reggae music. We later began working together on a number of projects and Lewis then joined Sleep in Motion shortly after the band formed. I met Ryan when he joined a band I’d been playing with for a number of years. We toured together sporadically and eventually decided to form Sleep in Motion with the intention of playing live and writing music together more regularly.

4. Each band member's favourite band?

Ryan: It will always be Avenged Sevenfold for me.

Alex: Like many musicians, Nirvana were a huge influence on me during my teens. The band inspired me to begin taking music more seriously and to join my first band at the age of 17. My favourite bands in recent years include Bob Vylan and Soft Play.

Lewis: Too many to choose from but right now Mudvayne.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Ryan: I honestly couldn’t give a definitive answer however, the album really was written around my anxieties around death and just realising my own mortality. I still find it terrifying to try to comprehend the feeling of physically not existing, but I’ve learnt to really appreciate each aspect of life as you really never do know when your time here will end.

6. Where was your last gig?

Ryan: Our last headline show was in our hometown of Nottingham in the UK and we’re back to kick off the tour there at Rough Trade on November 10th!

7. Where would you like to play?

Alex: As a Nottingham lad, Rock City is a personal favourite. I’ve played the main stage a number of times and would love to return, this time with Sleep in Motion.

Ryan: Download festival would be the dream!

8. Who would you like to support?

Ryan: Currently, I’m listening to a lot of Falling in Reverse, so I’d go for them! But honestly, I just want to be on the road next year as much as possible so I’d jump on a tour with anyone right now and play as much as possible!

9. Who not?

Ryan: Anyone who talks to venue staff, promoters, crew members or sound engineers like shit. I’ve seen this happen far too many times over the years and I cannot stand this kind of behaviour.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

Ryan: My suggestion to beat it is to keep doing it! If it’s what you want to do then get up there and give it everything!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Ryan: There’s not one particular band, I see so many local bands that just have such passion and dedication for doing what they do. I’m inspired by The success of the UK music scene right now, We have so many bands emerging and it feels like the alternative and metal scenes in the UK are beginning to thrive, it’s really cool.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Alex: A lot of people ask for used drumsticks, which is fairly normal. One lady once asked for a photograph with me and later printed it on her daughter’s birthday cake - which I thought was cute.

Ryan: Used sweaty stage towels. I don’t get it, man.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Ryan: I just still cannot believe that people come to see us and know the lyrics. It blows my mind still to see someone singing the lyrics of our songs in the crowds. It’s just such an amazing feeling and I can’t thank everyone enough for listening to the songs and coming to the shows.

14. What do you think of our site?

Ryan: Love it! Thanks so much for having us!
