Interviews: Sonic Tides

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Post-Rock band Sonic Tides from Belgium. Check out this band and follow them on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?

We were discussing the band name for a long time and we were never agreeing on a name. So we decide to come up with a band name that embodies the nature of our music since our music has lots of dynamic variations, softer smooth, and aerial moments mixed with intense and frenetic parts. We thought these variations could be represented pretty accurately by the movements of the tides in the sea. Flowing up and down. So these kinds of waves of musical intensity fit the name Sonic Tides pretty well. We all finally agreed on that name.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

It felt like a natural fusion of all the different influences the band members brought to the table. It wasn’t so much of a conscious decision ... it was more of a natural organic result of our creative minds coming together.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Yes we did, we all have been playing in different bands for a long time and we were all already friends for years through music. One day we decided to try and create something together, and that led us here.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Gilles (guitar/vocals): All Them Witches

Max (Bass): L’impératrice

Thib (drums): Raketkanon

Kevin (guitar/vocals): The Bronx

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

It’s not someone or something in particular that drives us to create music. It is really more of an urge to express ourselves artistically, it also has a therapeutic function, it is for most of us unthinkable to not write music. We have always done it since we started playing, it’s like a second nature and it is sparked internally rather than externally. That doesn’t mean we are not massively inspired by the amazing work that other artists produce. We are avid music listeners as well so we are constantly searching for new amazing music out there.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last gig was at La Zone, an underground venue in Liege, Belgium.

7. Where would you like to act?

We are planning a Canadian tour for next summer, and we would also love to play some gigs in the USA and the UK.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

We would love to feature with other alternative bands that we love such as Psychotic Monks (France) for example.

9. Whom not?

We’d rather not feature any artist that wouldn’t match our musical universe or that would be out of place. Such as very different music genres: i.e. mainstream pop projects

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

We haven’t really suffered from stage fright, although there is real anticipation and excitement feeling minutes before going on stage! Regarding advice, I would say focusing on taking a few deep breaths to stay calm and focused before starting the show, and also enjoy the moment to the fullest and be grateful for the opportunity to share your creation with interested people and connect with a live audience is a truly magical and beautiful thing.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

A mixture of modern and more old school influences ranging from Psychedelic porn crumpets, Sonic Youth, to Pink Floyd and also a significant part of our identity is influenced by some local underground bands from our country Belgium, such as The K., It it Anita or Empty Head.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Nothing too crazy so far, we’ve had the usual requests for playing naked and we also had one father that asked us to write a birthday song for his daughter which was pretty unexpected!

13. What do you think of your fans?

We don’t really have any generalized opinion on them aside from the fact that we always are happy to connect and engage with anyone that likes our music. Music is about sharing, after all, so we love to do just that!

14. What do you think of our site?

We surfed through the website and we really enjoy the project! Seems like it is a great platform for discovering new artists!

15. Something to add?

Nothing in particular, maybe just for anyone reading this, go check out our social media to stay up to date with the latest news. We will have big announcements and news in September
