Interviews: The Haptics

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Post-Punk band The Haptics from Canada. Check out this band and follow them on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?

I (Jin, singer) was reading a William Gibson book where he references something he calls “haptic reconnaissance”. I really loved this phrase and discussed the possibility of adding “haptic” to the band name. He suggested “The Haptics” and that was it!

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

I’ve always loved grunge, post-punk, and punk music. There’s something really raw, vulnerable, yet sophisticated about a post-punk sound that strikes a chord in me.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

We actually all met online! We were individually looking for artists to play with and found each other. Even though we had just met, we had instant chemistry and considered each other friends.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Jin: Depeche Mode or Boy Harsher

Cam: right now Oh Sees

Brent:  Peter Hook and the Light

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

I draw a lot of inspiration from life experiences and emotions that I’ve felt that I find to be universally shared emotions: themes like impermanence, doubt, blind love, and anger. I find writing music to be the best and most cost-effective therapy I’ve ever personally tried. When you’re able to shape your emotions into words or music, it really translates those emotions into something tangible that you’re able to communicate, share, express, and release.

6. Where was your last gig?

We last played at Portside in Vancouver, BC. It’s always a pleasure to play there, it’s a fantastic bar and venue.

7. Where would you like to perform?

I’d love to perform at an outside festival like Outside Lands, I’ve played outdoor shows before and always found the energy to be super fun and contagious.

8. Whom would you like to perform with?

I’d love to open for Depeche Mode's Tears for Fears or Wire Spine, a break-out Vancouver-based duo.

9. Whom not?

As much as I completely admire pop music, I don’t think we’d be quite right for a Taylor Swift show.

10. Any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

I absolutely get stage fright every time I perform. My tips: have a good friend support you and be a friendly face in the crowd; be ready with improvised lyrics if you forgot a word or two; practice in front of the mirror and in the shower, wherever you can; trust your fellow bandmates.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

I always really looked up to Shirley Manson, lead singer of Garbage. She’s so badass. And Siouxsie Sioux, of course! I think we also draw a lot of inspiration from bands like Nirvana, Joy Division, and Interpol.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Foot pics.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Our fans are amazing and we genuinely care about each and every listener. Thank you so much.

14. What do you think of our site?

I love the offerings on your site! And I think it’s a super effective and engaging way to Discover new and brilliant music to add to my listening repertoire.

15. Something to add?

Thanks so much for the interview! Check us out on Instagram (the.haptics) and Facebook (The Haptics) for the latest. Lots of love from Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
