Interviews About Albums: Nonpoint - Heartless (2023)

In this new interview, we sat down with the American Rock band Nonpoint to ask some questions about their album "Heartless". 

1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?

E: The Heartless EP is our second EP in our tribute to lessons of the everyday person and how we’re all just one of the characters in our own versions of Wizard of Oz. I chose to take it from the perspective of the Tinman, which if you research looks to be as essential as Dorothy in the 39 books written in the series up until 1951.

2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?

E: I’ve been sitting on the idea for decades, so I knew the direction I wanted to take with the concept. Seeing it’s generally about the hard lessons of the working man trying to be good in a world making him feel less and less, I chose to take it from the perspective of the Tinman, which if you research looks to be as essential a character as Dorothy in the 39 books written in the series up until 1951.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?

E: Music is composed by us all in one way or another. Everyone for the most part plays and writes their parts give or take. The lyrics, vocal melodies, and arrangements are what I do mostly.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

E: Probably Heartless if you want to see what it’s all about. That one has some lyrics people I think will enjoy.

5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD? If there is what it is?

E: I guess it would be that we all take that journey down the yellow brick road with our friends, traveling past talking trees throwing apples at us, flying monkeys and witches trying to kidnap us, through all the lions and tigers and bears all to get into a place we find out is run by a conman who fools people into thinking they’re he can give them a better life. There’s a better destination in store for us if we change the story.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

From the song Heartless

E: I got no horse of any color. Got no mayor. I have no other kind of governance or leadership that I can trust. I got no dude behind some curtain, with an ego bruised and hurtin’ from a lack of confidence and wanderlust. I got no guns, but the bat stays strapped yeah. Don’t need any funds, cause the bat stays strapped, yeah. I might be heartless but the brain still snaps, yeah. A little rusty but it’s all coming back, yeah.

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

E: My mother was a massive fan of The Wizard of Oz and we used to watch it religiously every Thanksgiving when I was a kid. So it definitely had something to do with it ending up in the creative pool of ideas I was pulling from when writing this idea out. Thanks, Mom!
