Interviews: GODFROST
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Industrial Metal/Alternative Metal/Post-Grunge band GODFROST from Japan. Check out the interview.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name? Did you plan it or did it just come to you?
Frost: The name Godfrost comes from the band I play in called “Gods of Decay”.
I'm known in Japan as Gods of Decay's guitarist Frost, and the Japanese pedal brand “THE NEXT SOUND” released my signature pedal with the word “GOD” on it.
In other words, "GOD" is a word that has a special meaning to me.
So, I came up with the idea of naming my solo project Godfrost (GOD+Frost).
I also like that it resembles Godflesh, whom I admire.
2. Why did you decide to play this genre?
Frost: For this solo project, I had the idea to do something different from “Gods of Decay”.
As for the industrial sound, I thought it would make an impact.
The most important thing in music is the melody, but I wanted to include music from various genres in the album to transcend genres while also having an impact on the fans.
3. Did you know each other before forming the band?
Frost: Yes. Shred guitarist VI, who lives in South Korea, is an old friend of mine. He played an amazing lead guitar on one of the songs.
Kose is a reliable bass player that I rely on for support in “Gods of Decay”, and he plays great bass.
Yorke, a member of my band “Gods of Decay”, provided great programming on a few songs as well.
Luna Midnight, is the main vocalist who sings 5 songs on the album, and other female vocalists such as Emilypemly and Sara also perform wonderful songs.
4. What is each band member's favorite band?
Frost: My favorites include Days of the New, Creed, and Pearl Jam.
If you're looking for an industrial band, it's Godflesh.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Frost: If I had to choose one person as the greatest songwriter in my opinion, it would be Kurt Cobain of Nirvana.
I learned the importance of writing great melodies, so now I'm aiming to become a songwriter who writes great melodies.
6. Where would you like to act?
Frost: I'm a Japanese artist, and I have fans who support me in Japan, but I'd like to increase the number of people who listen to my work in Europe, America, and other parts of the world.
Because of this, we signed with the European record label Sliptrick Records.
We also interact with bands from overseas.
Recently I have also become interested in Korea and Asia.
7. Whom would you like to feature with?
Luna Midnight: I think it’s difficult to decide who as there are so many absolutely amazing artists out there but I most definitely have great respect for artists like Rammstein, The Cramps, Green Day, and Vision Video. They have all definitely influenced me in different but important ways so I would be honored to ever have the privilege of being featured in any of their music.
8. Whom not?
Luna Midnight: I like to think of myself as a relatively flexible artist, not necessarily bound by genre, so there is no one I can think of that I would be particularly opposed to.
9. Has anyone ever suffered from stage fright? Are there any tips for beginners to overcome it?
VI: Think positively daily that you can do it.
- Create your own routine and practice it.
- There is more to be gained from failure, so be open-minded and perform to the best of your ability.
And if you fail, pursue the cause of why you failed, correct it, and repeat the output.
If you succeed, look back on the day, write down on paper what you did before and why you succeeded, stick it in a place where you can see it regularly, and keep it in your mind.
- Do image training and meditation for success at a set time.
- Thoroughly prepare in advance.
- Practice at 200% effort daily. This will allow you to give 100% on the day of the competition.
VI: Mr.Big
I am greatly inspired by the quality of their catchy melodies, songs, tunes, and playing techniques. In particular, guitarist Paul Gilbert has greatly influenced my formation as a guitarist. I have memories of copying, practicing, and studying his fingering, phrasing, picking, etc. very hard.
There is no doubt that he is still one of the best guitarists around.
11. What do you think about your fans?
Frost: I want to thank them very much for always supporting me. Even on my radio show, I sometimes get inspiration for my music from comments from fans.
12. What do you think about our site?
Frost: It's a great music media outlet where you can learn about interesting bands from around the world.
13. Is there anything you would like to add?
Luna Midnight: Thank you for taking the time to speak with us. We are all very excited to share with you the world of “Godfrost” and all that encompasses. We hope you’ll join us on our musical journey.
Frost: Although we are Japanese artists, we have a different personality and musical tastes compared to other bands hailing from Japan.
I am an artist who cannot be categorized into genres.
Please listen to and enjoy Godfrost's unique album.
