Interviews: Beyond Shadows
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Melodic Death Metal band, Beyond Shadows, from Sweden. Check out the interview and follow the project on his FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?
The message of our band is to take shared life experiences so that others can relate and take that as a source of positivity and hope which is symbolized by light. How does one say light without saying light? We went with the dualities of light and dark with shadows. So then what is beyond shadows? Beyond Shadows is light, essentially.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
I was writing melodic death metal not knowing that melodic death metal existed. I am a student of 80’s metal and as I grew up I got into death metal. In my head, I thought I was doing something completely original and unique by playing heavy guitar with the melodies. It wasn’t until a friend of mine made a comment that I sounded like another band that I realized this genre existed.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Unfortunately, we did not know each other before the band was formed. There is a big age difference between Chris and me, so there is no way I could have known him at fourteen. Chris joined the band over 15 years into its existence.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
My favorite band, I would have to say, is Metallica. I am almost tired of saying Metallica at this point. But I do have their logo tattooed on me, so I guess it is stuck as my answer.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Life experiences inspire my songwriting. For example, Bret Hart was the inspiration for Skull, Heart, Wings but in general, it is just life itself as it is happening.
6. Where was your last gig?
My last gig was in Club Europa in Brooklyn, NY. Either in 2009 or 2011, I honestly do not remember anymore.
7. Where would you like to act?
It would have been nice to play Wacken, if I could pick one place to play, that would be it.
8. Whom would you like to feature with? And whom not?
I would like to play with other melodic death metal bands. It’s a niche subgenre of metal, the fans are very passionate about it and the music means a lot, so I think it would be really dope. I try to stay away from any elitist type of guys who listen to my music and say it's “too melodic.” They just listen to music that is just heavy or fast or slow and there is no substance.
9. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
I did not suffer from stage fright. I am extremely outgoing and loud. I don’t have a problem going on stage or performing for people.
10. What bands have inspired you the most?
Beating a dead horse here, Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Slayer of course. I would love to mention some melodic death metal bands but I did not really listen to melodic death metal until I was older so I cannot really say that it “inspired me.”
11. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
More recently... One guy told me that he was a guitar player and he wanted to be involved in the songwriting process and asked me to send him songs I was currently working on. I didn't realize I had an ad up seeking a new guitarist? Another time at a gig, I had some girl trying to put my clothes on, that was definitely weird.
12. What do you think of your fans?
I think our fans are the most wonderful people in the world. I wish them all happiness, good health, and success. We all share a passion for this music. I feel like anytime someone succeeds we should all collectively clap for them. If someone who I care about succeeds or does well in life I feel like I am winning, myself. That is the same energy I carry with me for the fans, as well. I wouldn’t be doing what I was doing if it weren’t for those people. I am very grateful for the fans, grateful for every share, like, follow, or subscribe. I want to thank everyone for being on this musical journey with me.
13. What do you think of our site?
It is exciting to work with you. Your site is informative and a great way to get exposure. I love getting the chance to meet like-minded people who share a passion and a love for what we do, so this has been a fantastic experience. Thank you.
14. Something to add?
I will say, stay safe, stay hydrated, take care of one another, be nice to each other. Go out there and be great and I love you all. -Daniel
