Interviews: Hafgúa
On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Atmospheric Doom Metal/Doom Metal band, Hafgúa, from Iceland. Check out the interview and follow the project on his FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come
out just like that?
The Name is the Icelandic name for the sea monster that swallowed
Jona, and since the whole album has a theme that has very much to do
with the sea and drowning in depression, it seemed to fit the package.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
We’ve always been into heavy music, some of us more on the
Hardcore/metalcore side, but slow and atmospheric was the whole
picture we had in mind for this project. I tend to focus more
on texture and atmosphere in my writing, setting the tone.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Yes, we have all in some form or another been collaborating in other
bands and projects before, when we have ideas we often are each other's
first pick to collaborate with on projects, so when the concept of
hafgúa was born we had the band together very fast.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
Misha: Underoath
Carl: Leonov
Frank: Idan Raichel Project and Extol
Gerben: Okean Elzy, Mewithoutyou, Tom Waits
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Our songs deal mainly with our struggles in life, wrestling with depression, and fighting to stay afloat in a world that is seemingly going
mad, the constant force in our lives is God and this comes through in
our writing.
6. Where was your last gig?
We have never played live, nor do we have any ambitions to do so yet.
7. Whom would you like to feature with?
Leonov would be the best match
8. Whom not?
We don’t discriminate against any musicians, but Dua Lipa and Taylor
Swift are not at the top of our list.
9. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for
beginners on how to beat that?
No. Ignorance is bliss. In music, we find it most important to have a
good time with friends. Of course, you have to prepare and rehearse,
but a live show is not a studio recording. With Hafgùa however, we
have not had the experience to play live.
10. What bands have inspired you the most?
Leonov, Paradise Lost
11. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
We are not aware of any fans, yet.
12. What do you think of your fans?
We would love to meet them. They should be amongst the kindest people
to ever roam this earth, and we would love to have a cup of coffee
with them.
13. What do you think of our site?
We think it’s awesome that you a promoting little-known bands to a
bigger public. Keep up the good work!
14. Something to add?
Thank you so much for your interest in our project. And if there’s
anyone who considers him or herself a fan of our work, feel free to
reach out!
