Interviews: Chiral

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Rock band Chiral from Ireland. Check out the interview and follow the band on their INSTAGRAM PROFILE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name; did you plan it or come out just like that?

Initially, when myself and Gary started writing music together for this project, we didn’t have a planned band name, concept, or band aesthetic. Then shortly after recording Digital Whispers and another unreleased track called Ghost, some of the pieces started to come together. Then Gary suggested the name, Chiral, after a re-watching of the most awesome show, Breaking Bad, and the scene where Walter White teaches the class about Chirality.

Around the same time, we had just written ‘I Bring Chaos’

As we are both huge fans of the show Breaking Bad, the concept of Chirality made sense to how we were approaching the writing in the band, and from that moment we had a more focused vision of how our music and aesthetic should evolve. It was then we introduced the Gas Masks and split imagery, and this concept of Chirality was also applied to how the mixing is approached and how the instruments are placed within the mix.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

I’m not sure we fully know which genre we properly belong in. However, we do like to mix it up with a heavy rock/metal sound, some dance elements, and good helping of darkness 😉

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

I knew Gary a few years before the band was formed, as I had worked with him at his Red Lake Recording Studio on my own solo project, and we just clicked and that planted the seed of someday working together in this band.

About 6 months after we started Chiral, we’re looking for a Bass player.

Al Tierney had been working on his solo project ‘Bluster Bhoy’ in Red Lake Recording Studios and Gary approached him about playing bass for Chiral. Gary played him some of the music we’d recorded and Al was really into it.

Then a couple months after Al joined, Graveyard Ed hung up his drumsticks and Gary moved from Guitar to Drums. Chiral, now without a guitar player we needed to fill that spot.

That’s when Chris Craig of the amazing Irish rock band Vendetta Love, was approached and the rest as they say is history.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Adam (Vocals) – Kyuss / Pantera /FNM

Gary (Drums) - Nirvana / Therapy / Metallica

Al (Bass) - Beatles / NIN / White Zombie

Chris (Guitar) - Avatar / Alice in Chains / GNR

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Other than all those God damned voices in my head looking for an outlet😉….

I just have a love for creating art/music and want to express that creativity, and it’s cool I get to do that with a bunch of dudes I highly respect as musicians & friends.

We all challenge each other and that means bringing our game faces to the table and seeing what comes out the other side.

6. Where was your last gig?

Early May 2024 we did a short tour in Germany with The Hacklers. This would have been my last gig, seeing The Hacklers perform in AJZ Leisnig, Germany.

7. Where would you like to act?

I’d love for us to get onto any of the big summer festivals like Download / Wacken / Hellfest

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

Personally, working with any of these guys would be amazing: Josh Homme / Trent Reznor/ Mike Patton / Clutch / Deftones / Code Orange

9. Whom not?

Chiral loves everyone 😊

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Nothing like a quick shot of Jägermeister or 2 to put out that fire, before storming a stage.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

As a collective Chiral’s influences go from: NIN, Therapy, Deftones, Faith No More, The Prodigy, Korn, and Tool. But there are so many more subtle creative influences each member brings to the band.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

I think we need to rephrase this question, too. What's the weirdest thing a Chiral fan has ever received from the Band? Then I can tell you about that time we sent a lucky fan a signed, used pair of underwear, as modeled in our Video for Kubrick’s Odyssey. She now has said “Pants” framed and on display in her Chiral Shrine. Check out the pics, we are tagged on our Instagram.

13. What do you think of your fans?
