Track By Tracks: Devine Defilement - Age Of Atrocities (2024)
1.Summoning:
We wanted to set the stage for what’s to come. We are huge horror fans, especially of the Evil Dead franchise so we felt it would be the appropriate choice to open the album.
2. Wolf of Bedburg:
This was actually one of the earliest songs written for the album. Its working title was "hound," and so it came to be that Ingó gravitated towards werewolf imagery for the lyrics. The song ended up being based on the true story of 16th-century German serial killer Peter Stumpp, who was dubbed "the wolf of bedburg" due to the beastial nature of his murders. The locals thought he had struck a deal with the devil to gain the power to transform into a werewolf.
Seeing as how it was one of the first songs written for AoA and being a quite heavy track that hits hard, we thought it fitting to be the album opener.
3. Byzantine Blinding:
The first track we released of AOA the song is based on the horrific war crimes done by the Byzantine Empire. Specifically the act of blinding an army of POW’s with hot pokers and sending them marching home. Just imagine meeting an army of blinded soldiers walking through the countryside.
4. Malformed Grin:
This specific song is inspired by a couple of different things. Interactions with junkies and the classic 80’s movie “I Spit on Your Grave”. The story follows a man who’s addicted to drugs and in his desperation, he defiles a woman and thinks he has killed her. But in the end while high as a kite she reveals that she’s alive and she gets her vengeance.
5. Labyrinth of Disfigurement:
This one is based on a member of the band who went through something horrible in his youth. The song is about a man who wants to get even with the man who broke him in his youth. In his anger and desperation for revenge, he makes a deal with a vicious entity to torture and kill the man. But in the end, the tables turn and both men meet their end.
6. All Rise:
This is an interlude to set the mood for the second half of the record. The faint sample underneath the synth is an old Marlboro commercial. Haha
7. S.C.U:
This one is by the people for the people. Slam Crew United is about family sticking together and calling out people who try and take credit for someone else’s work or success.
8. Betrothed to Blasphemy:
This is sick. It’s based on the crimes of Jeffery Dahmer don’t really think I need to say anything else. The man was sick.
9. Embedded in Filth:
I guess you could call this our first “diss-track”. But it’s a song about someone hoarding themselves into the grave.
10. Wraith:
This song definitely stands out quite a bit from the rest of the album. While it has a lot of the Devine Defilement hallmarks, it's also got its own unique ethereal vibe. The lyrics were written by former guitarist Árni about dealing with difficult emotions from the point of view of an entity in the beyond. Heavy and brutal, but also steeped in haunting melodies and dissonance.
11. ”SIC”:
We all grew up on Slipknot or had a phase being engulfed with that band at some point in time. So covering them was a no brainer.
