Behind The Scenes: Mausoleum - The Curse Of The Tomb (Official Video)

"The Curse of the Tomb" is our first video project, inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's unsettling tale, "The Tomb." We aimed to vividly bring this haunting narrative to life through visual storytelling while preserving the essence of Lovecraft's work and delivering an engaging and coherent viewing experience. This project marked our initial foray into video production, and our goal was to create a piece that made sense, resonated with viewers, and effectively captured the chilling atmosphere of the original story.

 

To achieve this, we went through an extensive process of scouting locations to find the perfect backdrop. After a thorough search, we selected an old Catholic monastery in our area, known for its beautiful Gothic architecture. The grand structures and atmospheric grounds of the monastery provided the ideal setting for the ancestral house and the surrounding environment central to our story. This location significantly improved our visual storytelling, allowing us to effectively convey the themes of isolation and mystery that are central to Lovecraft's narrative. We started by creating detailed storyboards that matched each visual scene with the lyrics of our adaptation. This careful planning ensured that we accurately represented every moment and captured the essence of the story. After finishing the initial storyboard, we thoroughly reviewed and refined it to streamline the narrative, resulting in a polished video that effectively conveyed the chilling themes of Lovecraft's tale while maintaining a compelling visual experience.

 

We used several digital cameras and a gimbal to achieve the precise shots we needed. The gimbal was especially useful for capturing smooth, dynamic movements, adding a professional touch to our footage. To perfect the wardrobe for our main character, we conducted several test shots to evaluate how the costume interacted with the environment and lighting. These adjustments ensured that the final look enhanced the eerie atmosphere of the video. To enhance the visual experience, we borrowed colored lights and smoke machines from friends, which added depth and ambiance to our scenes. We also set up a large green screen to film individual band shots, allowing us to integrate the band members into various backgrounds and settings, enriching the narrative and visual cohesion.

 

Looking back on this first-time endeavor, we are proud of our accomplishments. Despite the challenges, we successfully brought Lovecraft’s eerie tale to life with a compelling visual narrative.
