Interviews: Sullen Eyes

On this new occasion, we have had the opportunity to interview the Metalcore band Sullen Eyes from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, did you plan it or come out just like that?

The name for the band kind of just came up after spitballing a few names around. We later agreed upon Sullen Eyes. We feel this name better represents us and the message we try to convey. The eyes are the window to the soul and you can learn so much about someone from them.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

I’ve always wanted to be in a heavy band since I was a child. My mother brought home an Underoath CD to me in Elementary School. Ever since then, I was hooked on music with screaming and loud and aggressive music. I grew up going to shows all over San Diego and being brought up in the scene really solidified my love for this music and culture.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

A good amount of us knew each other when we formed. Originally, it was me (Noah) and our drummer (Mikey) who started the band shortly after high school. We later picked up Johnny, our guitarist, and he also went to the same high school as us and was in one of my first bands ever. Through connections, music school, and shows, we came across our newest members, Jordan and Scott.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

My favorite band of all time would have to be Underoath for the significant impact that band made on shaping my life but on a heavier sense, I have always loved Nails. Johnny our rhythm guitarist, Slayer due to heavily inspired his writing and playing style. Our bassist Jordan, Of Mice & Men, was his gateway into the scene making them impactful for him. Our drummer Mikey, loves Reflections, even so much to have The Color Clear album tattooed on him. Forest our lead guitarist Scott, his inspiration for his technical style of playing comes from his love of Born of Osiris and Periphery.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

For me, what inspired and motivated me is the overall spirit of hardcore and heavy music. Seeing other's successes and people's happiness through this scene keeps me going. Rising tides lift all ships and I think that’s beautiful.

6. Where was your last gig?

Our last show was at Red Brontosaurs Records in San Diego, CA with Bluntsplitter, Eyas Luna, and Out of Chances.

7. Where would you like to act?

We really just want to get the opportunity to play all over the country and share our music with people. It doesn’t matter if the show is in a parking lot or garage, or even on a professional stage. We are just happy to be sharing our craft with you.

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

We just want to play shows with people who have like-minded goals and make the scene better.

9. Whom not?

No creeps or weirdos

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

I think stage fright is normal. I personally have pretty bad social anxiety and overall pretty shy. At first, I tried to just focus on doing my thing and not letting the crowd scare me. But as you will realize, the more into the music YOU get, the more the crowd will also get into it.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

I think there are a lot of bands that all inspire us. Whether it’s their work ethic, their story or message, or just making badass music, there are so many things to be inspired by

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Hmm, the first thing that pops into my head was when we played a show in Los Angeles and a person tried to buy the shirt I was wearing seconds before the set started. I’m sure there are others but that’s still crazy to me lol

13. What do you think of your fans?

They’re obviously the best.

14. What do you think of our site?

Amazing
