Behind The Tracks: Foxhole - Gold (Single) (2024)
“Coming up to the end of last year (2023) we were contacted by Steel City Studio in Sheffield who reached out to us about coming in and doing a track. They had recorded and produced bands such as Bring Me the Horizon, All Time Low, You Me at Six, Boston Manor, Deaf Havana, and While She Sleeps (to name a few…) and obviously jumped at the opportunity.
I had written Gold around the same time and we had been working on a concept EP titled ‘Unrequited Love & Other ClichĂ©s’. The general theme had to do with loss and coming to terms with reality, navigating emotions, and mental health. While there’s a lot of contemplation and sadness in those moments of nostalgia, I also wanted there to be a celebration in the ending and remind ourselves that it’s okay to feel and to let go; to move on and acknowledge that those moments make us into who we are and that both the present and future hold such beauty and magic. We need to accept our pasts and ourselves in order to make room for something new - if we don’t let go of whatever we’re holding onto, how are we meant to reach and touch anything else. That next interaction could turn into gold.
By the time March 2024 came around we headed up to Sheffield and spent two days in the studio recording Gold with producer Callum Benson and assistant J Lambert. The entire experience was amazing, sitting in the same room and playing through the same desk that had been graced by such incredible bands before us. Callum was an absolute wizard and the magic he worked throughout the session was so exciting - this sound was next level.
Both nights after finishing our session Cal took us on a little pub tour around Sheffield, I think the second night we ended up at an open mic and this place was full of grooving packed inside and out. We had a couple drinks and thought it would be fun to pop our name down and ended up playing an impromptu blues set which managed to get the whole place going. I think we played a couple covers and then swung out one of our originals. We were so stoked and taken back by the response we got and how much we impressed Cal, I remember him saying after how he was going to make a thing of taking out bands he’s recording to random open mics after sessions to see how they perform on the spot and feel the vibe of a room - I hope he’s stuck to that haha.
