Jonny: Conceptually, Upsurge is part of a greater story, a pivotal moment, one shred of hope amongst fear, doubt, and loneliness. It’s an important event, detailing how overwhelming things can get and the moral is to never lose hope. Because of that, I wanted the overtone to be hopeful and upbeat, while still conveying the darkness and depression that threatens to creep in during daily life.

From a musical standpoint, it is a complex array of emotions to describe in a short amount of time. I actually set myself a challenge of seeing how many different sections I could include without ruining the integrity of the song! Straight out of the gates, I wanted some tempo and big vocals to convey the epic moment, because it is a choice of whether to face your fears or to live with them, and that should be epic. I also wanted a chorus that was simple yet also a little different to keep listeners on their toes. Overall, I’m happy with how it turned out and I hope the listeners enjoy something a little different!
