Behind the Tracks: Otherworldly Entity - Sin (Single) (2024)
We initially released Sin on our album Psilocyborg in 2023, but we're releasing the acoustic studio version of it on our upcoming album Inside-Out.
Sin, as a song, was written almost as an "anti-ballad." The idea behind it was to recognize and acknowledge when love and connection aren't there. We've written our share of love songs, so this was our approach against that.
The writing process is what makes this song fun and entertaining for us. First off, this was the first song that we wrote with Shawn Washer as our drummer. Shawn has a very heavy, metal background, and we were just figuring out how to fit that into our sound naturally. But the song has a funny story behind it.
I had written a demo for the song and sent it to Shawn and Zlatko. The premise of the song was based on something that a girl had said to me. She said "we're total opposites. You say things in rhymes, I say things in prose." That was the starting point of the song. After I sent the demo to the guys, we really didn't touch on it for a few months. One day Zlatko texted me and said "let's meet up and work on new stuff." I of course agreed. When Zlatko arrived at my house, he said "let's work on that demo you sent us. Sin?" I said, "oh sure, yeah, do you remember how it goes?" He said that he didn't, so I said "this is the bass line." I started playing a bass line. A bass line. Not THE bass line, because I had forgotten how it went myself. From there, we composed the entire song in a rough format. Later, I went back and listened to the original demo. It sounded nothing like it. While Zlatko and I were recording our rough demo, my roommate, the amazing visual artist Marina Giraud, came walking through the room. Zlatko said "we're recording a demo" and she said "yeah, we'll I'm angry." We later sampled this into the backing tracks of the breakdown in Sin.
It wasn't until after we had finished the studio version of the song that I told Zlatko and Shawn that I totally made it up on the spot that day and that I forgot how it went. Which just made us all laugh because it became one of our favorite songs on that album. Which is why we approached it with new eyes on Inside-Out
