Interviews: Epic Down
On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Sludge Metal/Doom Metal band Epic Down from Germany. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?
ED: That's a funny question, I guess it turned out that way. After a few months of making music together, we had collected a few ideas for possible band names on an old piece of paper and sometimes played around with some of them during breaks, modified them, and marked some really appealing results. The whole thing would probably have gone on for quite a while if Mitzschi hadn't told me one day during a rehearsal break, that he had created a SoundCloud for us under the name Epic Down and the first demos had been uploaded. At that point, we hadn't agreed on a name yet, but we didn't pursue it much further. In the end, we decided to leave it like that. The name somehow fits the music and was on the list for a reason. That's it.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
ED: It's not that we agreed on a concept or anything like that in advance. However, what was always repeated in conversations at joint meetings beforehand was the growing desire to play doom together. We share a passion for this kind of music and despite our age difference, we grew up with similar influences from bands and their sound. It may also have to do with a similar perception and processing of the events of our time, ultimately it's somehow in us.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
ED: Yes, we've known each other for over 20 years and this isn't actually our first project together. We played together in a band for about 5 years until 2009 and really experienced a lot during that time. The instruments were already the same back then. Unfortunately, we lost track of each other a bit during that time and only had little contact, mostly by e-mail. Some years later our paths crossed again and because we were both still highly motivated to grow something new, the threads came back together.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
Fabian: Earth, Sleep
Mitzschi: Windhand, Domherre, 1782
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
ED: The question is relatively easy to answer. On the one hand, it is almost always people or things created by people. On the other hand, it is nature and its underlying contexts. Together they provide a constant source of thematic inspiration for music and words.
6. Where was your last gig?
ED: As we haven't played any concerts with this project yet, the only thing that would come into mind would be the last gig of our former band. We can't remember exactly where that was.
It was an open air at a river in the southern area at the gates of Leipzig. We spent half the night waiting and ended up playing into the sunrise. After the gig, a guy decided to try a head dive into the shallow river and hurt his head badly, which forced a huge spectacle, which is why it's still relatively easy to remember.
7. Where would you like to act?
ED: I don't know, we haven't put any thought into it yet. Open-air concerts are fun, at least as long as the weather is good. But there is also a whole range of clubs and venues that are definitely interesting. A concert with a really special atmosphere would be nice. An old theater hall or an old cinema would be appealing to match the music.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
ED: If it's up to us, with nice people.
9. Whom not?
ED: Fascists and enemies of humanity.
But a collaboration with a K-pop act or something like Tokio Hotel would be really creepy too.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
Mitzschi: Always. Unfortunately, I don't have a tip, I can't say, "tip your head...". right?
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Mitzschi: I would think Sleep, Melvins, Black Sabbath, and many more.
Fabian: You could certainly add a lot more, depending on how much detail you want to go into. In the end, songs by the Velvet Underground, Russian Circles, and Kyuss also exerted an inspiring influence.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Mitzschi: Back in the 90s, someone asked me for my autograph after a concert with my band. I was completely perplexed at that moment and probably looked at him in disbelief for what felt like an eternity.
13. What do you think of your fans?
ED: If there are indeed already fans of our music, they have a taste, which we very much welcome.
It's a great thing when people appreciate your music and we are very grateful for that.
14. What do you think of our site?
ED: This is a really very welcome and well-implemented website and a really good platform for current news and information about artists and their work. Our sincere thanks for your work, you're doing a great job and for bands like us who are just starting out, it's a good chance to get growing attention and push it forward.
15. Something to add?
ED: We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Argonauta Records. We would also like to say a big thank you to the people at Grand Sound PR, From The Depths Entertainment, Bojan and the crew at Doomed Nation. We really appreciate their dedicated work for the scene.
And of course a big hello to all the followers and supporters out there in the world, it's a real pleasure to be with you!
