Interviews: SANDVEISS

On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Heavy Rock band SANDVEISS from Canada. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?

The band’s name was inspired by Ellen Sandweiss, the actress who portrayed Cherryl in the original Evil Dead film. We had an Evil Dead poster hanging in our rehearsal space and a former band member noticed her name and suggested 'Sandweiss' as a potential band name. We liked its sound but decided to make a slight adjustment for a distinctive touch, resulting in 'Sandveiss.'

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

All four of us have been rock enthusiasts since childhood. However, our musical tastes are quite diverse, ranging from the Bee Gees to Mastodon. When Luc formed the band back in the day, he wanted to create a project that combined elements of Alice In Chains, Black Sabbath, Kyuss, Voivod,  and other bands known for their heavy, powerful, and melodic riffs. This is the direction we've continued to pursue in our music ever since.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Luc and Shawn knew each other before Sandveiss was founded because they both worked in the guitar department at a music store in Quebec City. Max and I also knew each other, having shared a practice space with our previous bands a few years earlier. It’s no exaggeration to say that when I learned that Max had joined the band, it gave me a bit of courage to apply for the drummer position.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

That’s a pretty tough question, haha. There are so many great bands out there, but if we had to pick just one favorite band for each member, it would probably look something like this:

Luc: Black Sabbath

Shawn: Van Halen

Max: Portugal. The Man

Dom: Nightwish

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Most of the lyrics address social and political issues, environmental concerns, and human tragedies, but they also explore more personal and philosophical topics.

6. Where was your last gig?

We had the opportunity to perform for the second time in the beautiful Magdalen Islands, Luc’s hometown. The people there are incredibly generous, attentive, and passionate about music, so it was a huge privilege to return there this summer.

7. Where would you like to act?

We’ve already had the chance to play at the fantastic Planet Desert Rock Weekend, a festival we recommend to anyone heading to Las Vegas. Additionally, one of my dreams is to someday perform at least once at the Tabernas Desert Rock Fest in Spain. The Duna Jam in Italy also looks incredible. Maybe one day, who knows?

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

There are so many personal heroes we’d love to collaborate with, but working with musicians like Bill Kelliher, Johanna Sadonis, Michel ‘Away’ Langevin, John Garcia, Jerry Cantrell or Tobias Forge would be an incredible privilege.

9. Whom not?

Kid Rock.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?

We were fortunate to get on stage at a young age, so our initial stage fright gradually faded during our early high school performances. To be honest, our biggest fear now is that our gear might fail in the middle of a show. As for overcoming stage fright, here’s my advice: Use the time allotted for load-in and soundcheck to thoroughly prepare and ensure everything is set up to your liking so you feel comfortable during your performance. An improperly adjusted drum kit, a poor mix, or even a cymbal that’s too high can be distracting, so make sure to use this time to get everything right. Beyond that, a bit of relaxation, five deep breaths, and giving it your all will help you feel proud of your performance.

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

There are so many bands and artists who have been, and still are, very inspiring. I would feel comfortable saying that the biggest inspiration has been Black Sabbath, among many other groups. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Alice in Chains, Mastodon, Dozer, Sleep, Tool, and Nirvana are also among the many influences on Sandveiss.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Unfortunately, nothing comes to mind in terms of quirky requests, but we've had some funny moments over the years. A few years ago, a woman thought it would be a good idea to give me two chicken bones as a gift since I'm a drummer. Maybe she was a fan of The Flintstones, but in any case, it really made me laugh. One time, the band was playing in a small bar, and the owner started throwing tampons at the guys in the middle of a song for no reason at all. Life on tour lets you meet all kinds of people, and it's wonderful to be able to experience those weird moments.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Our fans are the most extraordinary and coolest people on earth. They are attentive, respectful, generous, and very enthusiastic music lovers. We are truly lucky to have all these amazing people who have jumped on board and taken the time to navigate with us on this musical journey. We wouldn't be able to experience all these amazing adventures as a band if it weren't for them.

14. What do you think of our site?

Breathing The Core’s website and its vast content are incredible. It’s a golden encyclopedia. Thank you for working so hard to provide this amazing platform for all the musicians in the underground scene around the globe. The music industry definitely needs more dedicated people like you.

15. Something to add?

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to chat with you and your readers! I hope to cross paths with you guys on the road or at a show someday. Until then, enjoy Standing In The Fire!
