Behind The Scenes: Atomis - 12 Chains (Official Video)

From director Doug Cook: After attending a virtual production workshop in Vancouver, I was eager to explore how this technology could revolutionize storytelling. When I returned to Calgary, I was determined to incorporate virtual production into a project. I’ve been wanting to create another music video for ATOMIS “12 Chains”, but a real virtual production studio was beyond our budget. After some thought, I realized I could achieve a similar effect by shooting the entire video using miniatures.

I decided to create a virtual production setup by utilizing a large flat screen TV as a backdrop and compositing live-action elements, shot against a green screen, into the miniature world. This approach not only suited the story but also allowed us to achieve a high-quality result with limited resources.

For the miniatures, I collaborated with my talented friend Mike Matthew,s who built a 10’ x 10’ miniature forest. Using reference images and designs I provided, Mike constructed around 20 alien-looking trees that I could rearrange to fit different scenes. In my home studio, I carefully crafted the atmosphere with colored lighting, smoke, and the TV serving as the virtual background.

To bring the live-action component to life, I cast my good friend Brian Smith as both the humanoid and the wrath. We filmed at MTM Studios, where my friend Rebecca Toon, an amazing costume designer, created intricate costumes for both characters. With just the three of us, we spent a full day shooting against a green screen, using fans to simulate movement and alien-like atmospheres.

In post-production, I composited the live-action footage with the miniature sets, adding some creative digital effects and color to complete the vision. The end result is 12 Chains, a unique music video with a distinctive miniature aesthetic that feels both handmade and futuristic. Although no AI was used in the creation, it has an otherworldly feel that aligns perfectly with the music. We’ve received great feedback, and I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved.
