Behind The Scenes: Harakiri For The Sky - With Autumn I'll Surrender (Official Video)
Andreas J. Borsodi (video director): When MS approached me for a new Harakiri video, our first concept was a quite different one, featuring darker, more disturbing imagery.
But the more I listened to the song, the more I realized that a bittersweet approach might be a better fit, and the idea of showing a growing creative process via the painter inside another creative medium got stuck in my head.
The one condition I got from MS for changing the concept, was to keep the haunting image of the Viennese flak towers in the video. By moving the timeframe a few decades back, I found my tragic setting for the young couple.
I also thought it fitting, since we were releasing a song with "autumn" in the title in autumn, to let it be reflected in the video as well. The penultimate season of the year is loaded with associations. It can be vibrant and beautiful, yet it also symbolizes an approaching end. At the end of the year, animals and plants die or go into hibernation, cold and darkness take over.
JJ’s lyrics deal with confronting loss and working through it. This resonates with pretty much all of us in one way or the other, we all have to go through it at certain points in our lives. I wanted to show one of the countless possible variants.
For me, it was very appealing to let the audience discover slowly, how that particular day was at the same time the last beautifully innocent, and also probably the most devastating day in the life of our protagonist. Those extremes lie closer to each other than we often want to realize; How it might only take one day to turn whole lives upside down is a very frightening thought. Still we have to find ways to move on.
