Interviews About Albums: Deithesis - Equilibrium (2024)

In this new interview, we sat down with the Irish Heavy Metal band Deithesis to ask questions about their album, "'Equilibrium".

1. What can you say about Equilibrium?

Due for physical format release on Halloween night 31st October via Sliptrick records. 8 tracks of 80’s inspired Classic style Heavy metal with some elements of thrash / power and doom metal.

The sound of 'Equilibrium' is mainly influenced by the classic metal of the 80s. There are elements of thrash, power and doom power absorbed into the writing also from that era. This was a pre-determined idea resulting in the natural style of the band. I suppose the reference bands would be Metallica, Megadeth, Candlemass and Iron Maiden2.

2. What is the meaning of the Equilibrium name?

It was a general observation, that despite all the opposing forces of nature conflicting, the universe somehow seems to continually balance itself. There is eventually a reforming to a certain state of equilibrium.

3. Which one is the composer of the Equilibrium?

I wrote the music and the majority of the lyrics. Allan wrote the additional lyrics. I had 11 songs finalized and ready for recording with programmed drum guide tracks. Thankfully the guitar and bass tracks were recorded for 8 songs prior to an accident, resulting in a broken wrist requiring surgery. The drums and vocals were recorded afterward. The next album will include those remaining 3 songs. All the songs were written riff first and the melodies would be developed. The lyrics were then gradually formed on top of the guitar lines and the song structure was decided upon. The guitar harmonies and solos were a work in progress throughout.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

I suppose it would be 'Beyond Tomorrow' as it contains my favorite guitar harmony lines on the album. This track was chosen as the first video and also the song that we distributed around for the initial promotion of 'Equilibrium'. ‘Beckon Tragedy’ has been chosen for the next video.

5. Is there a special message in Equilibrium? If there is what is it?

There is no special message as such, but there is a central theme running through the songs. This theme concerns cause and effect, relating to how our actions shape future outcomes. For every action, there is an opposite reaction resulting in a form of correction.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

The opening lines from 'Forsaken'. A moment of self-reflection where you try to reason some of your actions that are deemed out of character.

‘Once revered, but now to find
How easy we change to realign
The excuse, to define
That beyond all reason I deny
And it seems there's no way to change my mind
a clouded thought, arisen, an ideal impure
Within a world of decadence, a realm once senseless
The mirror frames the architect, where I am the only one’
Once revered, but now to find, How easy we change to realign
The excuse, to define, That beyond all reason I deny
And it seems there's no way to change my mind
A clouded thought, arisen, an ideal impure

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

My initial inspiration as a guitarist would have centralized around Dave Mustaine of Megadeth / Chuck Schuldiner of Death and Smyth/Murray of Iron Maiden. I listened to lots of different bands but those caught my attention initially. The great riffs accompanied by twin guitar harmonies really resonated with me, even before I picked up a guitar.

I would like to extend our gratitude to all our friends and family because they have all contributed in some form along the way.

A special album specific thanks to Tommie Kelly and Shauny Cads for the mixing and mastering in addition to Sliptrick for the album release.

8. Something to add?

Firstly, thanks to Breathing The Core for conducting the interview and to all the listeners who have checked out the album. To any readers unfamiliar with Deithesis please have a listen and keep watch for new material.

Cheers

Darren on behalf of Deithesis
