Interviews About Albums: The Haunting - The Haunting (2024)
In this new interview, we sat down with the Polish Dark/Horror project The Haunting to ask questions about his album, "The Haunting".
1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?
The idea for The Haunting's debut came to me some time ago. It was born out of my fascination with Japanese horror and the unique way of telling horror stories that blur the line between dreams (nightmares) and reality. While recording the first album for The Haunting, I wanted to convey that distinctive Japanese atmosphere of horror, often embracing a surreal, dreamlike sense of dread.
2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?
The meaning behind the project's name, as well as the album, further emphasizes the horror-inspired themes and the idea behind the music – the concept of "haunting" through dark sounds.
3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?
The Haunting is a one-person project; I composed, recorded, and mixed the entire album myself.
4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?
I think I would choose "Feasting on a Child's Soul and Body" because I feel that in this track, I managed to push the boundaries of horror the furthest, or at least it seems more unsettling to me than the other tracks on the album. My second choice would be the single "The Arrival of the Evil Spirit," as I believe it captures the cinematic atmosphere most, which is characteristic of the entire album.
5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD? If there is what it is?
I think the only additional meaning of the album is the intention to tell a horror story through dark, disturbing sounds and dehumanized voices.
6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?
There are virtually no lyrics on The Haunting's debut. There are only a few lines spoken by the characters of the story at different moments, but they don’t carry any hidden meaning beyond what comes directly from the concept's storyline.
7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?
My main inspirations came from various media related to Asian/Japanese horror. As for manga and anime, these were works by Junji Ito, the anime Dark Gathering, some episodes of Yami Shibai, and the ghosts/demons from Mieruko-chan and how they are portrayed. Video games also had a big influence on me, such as Lomando, Go Home, Paranormal HD, Walk 散歩, and Night Delivery. While creating The Haunting album, I wanted to translate the unusual way of telling horror stories, balancing between dream and reality, and distorted by terrifying, strange evil entities, that emit haunting, unforgettable sounds. You know that moment just before falling asleep, when you're about to drift off, but suddenly an image of a terrifying creature from a show, manga, or game you saw earlier jumps into your mind? It's so startling that it imprints itself in your memory, and you can't get it out of your head. I wanted The Haunting album to be the musical equivalent of that moment, haha.
8. Something to add?
Thank you very much for the interview. I hope I’ve caught your interest in The Haunting debut, as well as my DIY label, Sulphuric Darkness, which will focus on dark, unconventional sounds. I also want to thank everyone who has supported, and those who will choose to support this project in the future.
