Interviews: Anomic
On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Death Metal/Thrash Metal band Anomic from the Netherlands and Germany. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?
I guess the name came from feeling detached from society and social norms. It is a feeling that many people experience, being socially alienated. Moreover, the name opens up other windows for lyrical content other than the traditional thrash topics like politics and war, etc. I can feel free to dabble in topics like insanity and morbidity that sometimes result from being socially unoriented and ostracized.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
I was in a German thrash metal band called War Agenda right before I started Anomic. I left WA in August 2023 due to work strategy differences and we released an album with Great Dane Records in 2020. We were working on new material which did not come to life and so when I decided to leave the band I agreed with the guys that each would take their riffs and is free to use them however they want. So I have had a bunch of thrash metal riffs and full songs that I had written ready to be unleashed already. I always wanted to have a thrash metal band in which I could spit out all my anger and frustration with the world. When I left WA, I decided to start Anomic but to add the spectrum of death metal to the thrash element and make it sound different than WA. this also gives me more artistic freedom to incorporate all elements of thrash and death from every school there is
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Fadi and I have known each other since we lived in Syria and through the Syrian metal scene. We kinda lost touch for several years after the war when everyone got busy with their new lives. Fadi settled in Leipzig-Germany and I settled in Amsterdam. I contacted Fadi to work on the mixing and mastering for a sepulture cover that I organized with a bunch of friends and musicians, and since then we stayed in touch I invited him to join the band and mix and master 'Opacity', which he agreed to do.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
My favorite bands vary, but Slayer, Monstrosity, Coroner, Savatage, and Dark Tranquillity are always up there.
Fadi: "My favorite bands would be Iron Maiden, Emperor, Death, and Therion".
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Life. Human behavior. The gloomy state of the world. Personal experiences. Movies. And of course other bands and different genres of music. They all play important roles in our inspiration and motivation to write music for any project we're involved in.
6. Where was your last gig?
We have not played live yet. The band was formed in 2023 and we recorded the EP and released it as we contacted labels who would be interested in picking up our stuff for reissue. WormHoleDeath was the best of all the ones we interacted with and they will reissue our EP on November 22nd (2024). And they will also release our upcoming album in 2025. Next year, however, we will play some shows, the first one might be in May.
7. Where would you like to act?
We love every vibe of every type of live performance. From small clubs, which is amazing because of the intimacy and the old-school vibe to them, and to the big festivals where you might get more exposure for people who never heard of you. We are up for all kinds of shows anywhere in the world.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
All our heroes and friends from different bands. But also any opportunity to play live with any good band is always an honor of course.
9. Whom not?
Arrogant assholes who don't have any consideration for other bands and think that the world revolves around them.
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?
As I mentioned earlier, we have not had the chance to play live with Anomic yet. However, each one of us has been on stage various times with different bands. I played with previous bands in the Syrian and Egyptian scenes, namely the bands Oblivion, Zodiac, and Atlantis in Egypt, as well as Winterthorn in Syria. I don't think I could say that what I felt was stage fright. Maybe some, but the rush of being on stage overshadowed any fright. Especially when in the younger years when you were full of raw enthusiasm, you had no worries in the world. As for Fadi, he played live in Syria with a Doom/Death cover band. Also since he moved to Germany, he played live with a German underground War metal band called Wrahha. He played with them 10 to 15 times, and this is what he has to say about his stage experiences: "Probably every musician faces stage fright on some level, I don't feel much nervous before shows, usually I'd be more relaxed after a couple of songs. I would advise musicians though to try to stay focused and not waste energy right before a show".
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
So many bands from different genres of thrash and death metal, and even some speed and heavy now and then. We can cite bands such as Coroner, Death, Monstrosity, old Sepultura, Bolt Thrower, Dismember, Morbid Angel, Slayer, and Kreator.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
We don't have any weird experiences with fans, at least not yet! haha. As I said, the band is one year old, so not many crazy adventures have happened yet. But, fingers crossed!
13. What do you think of your fans?
They are awesome. We are not well known by any means, but the fanbase we have is loyal and supportive to the max. They give us that positive energy that all artists want to stay motivated. We are intrinsically motivated to begin with, but having positive feedback on your creative work helps. And our friends and supporters are very passionate about pushing us to create and release more material. They're fuckin amazing.
14. What do you think of our site?
It's fantastic. Keep up the good work and never stop supporting the underground. And hope that more sites will do the same work you do to spread the word.
15. Something to add?
Never give up, and support the underground. Many bands deserve more recognition. Buy the CDs and merch. Support on Bandcamp. Let the bands feel motivated and financially hopeful that they can keep going on and making music. Thanks for having us! cheers \m/
