Track By Tracks: Chief Ghoul - Harmonic Rites (2024)

1. Harmonic Rites:

This one is about the writing process and the end result. Songwriting for me is a ritual in a way, so that’s what I wanted to talk about in this song.

2. Above Below:

This one is ultimately about the interconnectedness of us all. Writing that out feels a bit pretentious, but I’m an animist so I do think there is a link between everything. The trees can sing so loud!

3. The Ripper:

I think I started writing this one as a sort of ode to Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, at least musically. From a lyrics point of view, I’m a big fan of horror movies, so lyrically I just went with that.

4. She’ll Keep Me Warm Tonight:

“A show for Gemini.” It’s about love with no light pollution. The city is great, but the country is greater. We lose a lot of perspective on our significance… or insignificance when we can’t see the stars. Cosmic horror and sex, that’s what this one is about.

5. They Dream:

This is another Cosmic horror one. I’m a big fan of some of Lovecraft’s stories and his descriptions of the elder gods. Whether space is infinite or not doesn’t matter, we can all agree we’ve seen very little of it, so what is out there? Horrifying things are out there I’m sure! This one is about those things and their current slumber.

6. Transmutate:

This song is about personal growth and some of the more esoteric traditions. I’ll leave it at that.
