Behind The Tracks: Fight The Tornado - Vortices (Single) (2024)
Vortices is probably one of the most airy songs I’ve written, which is relevant because while I was writing it, floating through the air was exactly what I was imagining! The topic of the song is about longing for a place to belong, never quite feeling like you fit in anywhere. Conceptually, I imagined this as drifting across the sky with portals (or Vortices, if you will) in every different direction, and no way of knowing where one may take you, whether you will find the belonging you’re looking for at the end of your journey.
Musically this is groovier than the previous single, Upsurge, as the unusual chord patterns allowed me to tap into some jazzier guitars, though still maintaining that signature distorted sound. The verses drive the song into a turbulent pre-chorus and the airy vocals of the chorus capture the message of hope I was meaning to convey on the uncertain journey of this song. There’s a lot more lead guitar work in this one (another product of having more ambient sections) but that doesn’t mean there aren't heavy sections. While the chorus has some drawn out chords on orchestral, the guitars and kick drum continue to blast away and there are still some harsh vocal sections throughout. I’m happy with how this one turned out and it is a little different, so I hope you enjoy!
