Interviews: Symetria
On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Heavy Metal band Symetria from the USA. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?
The band name actually came from Vince's son Gino. One day while he was sleeping as we were driving somewhere he popped up and said "Symetria, that would be a good name for a band" and it worked, so we kept it.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Vince: It's always been hard rocking stuff that I connected with the most. So it's what I wanted to play to connect with others in the same way.
Ken: I’ve always been into metal from a young age. I really started getting into music in middle school and most of what I was listening to was the popular metal, Metallica, Pantera, slayer, etc. I was also into the grunge rock stuff and even funk. This was just when I started learning drums so it carried over.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
Vince: No, Mike reached out to me after a prior project I was in split up and asked if I was interested in singing with "Totally Disgusted". That band ended up becoming BlyndSyde and eventually Symetria.
Ken: We really didn’t know each other until we met through being in other bands. I met Bryan when I was in a band called the Grow Room. He was brought in as a second guitarist and backup vocals and I think we clicked musically pretty early on. The Grow Room was short lived but a few years after that broke up he called me wanting to jam. After Bryan’s friend Shawn Cooper joined and (if I remember correctly) Bryan met Mike at another show where he was singing for another band, we would eventually become Totally Disgusted.
4. Each band member's favorite band?
Vince: Overkill
Ken: My favorite bands include Clutch, Lamb of God, Pantera, Hatebreed, Suicidal Tendencies & 311. Stuff I’ve gotten into more recently would be August Burns Red, Suicide Silence, Chelsea Grin, and some of the newer metalcore stuff.
Bryan: Volbeat
Kevin: Fates Warning
Mike: Totally mood-dependent, Old hardcore rap to metal to classical, whatever catches my ear.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Vince: the feelings you get when you perfect them and perform them.
Ken: I enjoy the technical aspects of drumming. I always try to add my own signature to our songs through my playing. As much as I like the technical aspects I think I play more through feel than anything else.
6. Where was your last gig?
The last gig was at Skid Row Garage in York, PA
7. Where would you like to act?
Truthfully, I'd love to see us get into the festival circuit.
8. Whom would you like to feature with?
Vince: Parkway Drive
Ken: I think a few of the bands I would most like to play with would be Anthrax, Lamb of God, or Tool.
9. Whom not?
Vince: Tribute Bands
10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tip for beginners on how to beat that?
Vince: I was 4 and in a pre-school play. I was so afraid I was crying about it, but a friend of mine named Chuck grabbed my hand and helped me through it.
Mike: Never experienced stage fright, I'm a people person and love to give it my all to help people forget the stress of the everyday world that so badly needs reconstruction. For that 1/2 hour to hour, we feel like nothing else matters but pure magnetic energy that keeps us sane.
Ken: I haven't really suffered from stage fright since I was young, playing in a band in high school. Being behind the drums and not being out front definitely helps. I don't think I could ever be a singer. I would just suggest to beginners, don't worry about the people in the crowd. It's hard to have that mentality starting out but unless you're in front of a bunch of your favorite musicians the people in the crowd aren't looking for perfection. At the end of the day, you're still just jamming, and if you're having fun and are the least bit confident you're good.
Kevin: Everyone gets stage fright, but I find that after you realize your gear is working properly you’re good to go, and after you hit that first note you’re in another world.
11. What bands have inspired you the most?
Vince: Anthrax, Metallica, Testament, Slayer, Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden.
Ken: I'm constantly finding new bands/drummers that inspire me. Growing up it was mostly Pantera, Lamb of God, Tool, and drummers like Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, & Dave Lombardo.
12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?
Ken: Honestly the weirdest thing so far has just been an autograph. I've never made it as far in a band to be recognized so much that someone would want my signature, so it's still kind of weird.
13. What do you think of your fans?
Mike: Our fans are people just like us with pretty much the same feelings and I am fortunate enough to share with the rest of the world how we feel.
Ken: I am grateful for the fans we have up to this point. It's great to see people that we played with or in front of twelve-plus years ago coming out to shows and following us even though we took a pretty long break and this is a sort of new iteration of the band.
14. What do you think of our site?
Your site, and others like you, are so pivotal right now in the music world, we wouldn't have an underground without it.
