Track By Tracks: Delta - Gemini (2024)
Gemini is the new album by the chilean progressive metal band, Delta. The cover art features a cryptic image of two figures resembling ghosts, symbolizing duality. Captured by photographer Gonzalo Donoso, the scene is inspired by the aesthetics of films like Blade Runner, with green and reddish hues—dark and mysterious.
The album consists of 10 tracks:
"Gemini" is the first track, offering a unique progressive metal sound that draws parallels to some of Genesis's work from the Peter Gabriel era, combined with very virtuosic and heavy passages characteristic of modern metal. Thematically focused on the internal duality of individuals, this track opens the album with a broad and dynamic sound.
"At Last" is the second track. It speaks to the individual's liberation from the need to change themselves to fit into a group—something very natural for social beings. This song celebrates authenticity with a melodic and progressive sound.
"The Tower" is one of the most intense songs on the album, featuring powerful riffs and hypnotic moments that seem to elevate the soul. Inspired by the tarot card "The Tower," it tells the story of those seeking power at the expense of others in a race where anything seems allowed, yet ultimately leads to loneliness and an inevitable fall.
"So Wrong" is the fourth track, marking the first song to use Spanish to express its ideas in the band's history. This track has a sound closer to alternative metal, with deep and intense sonorities. It includes instrumental passages reminiscent of jazz fusion, akin to bands like "Planet X," especially during the guitar solo. The song addresses the feelings of a person suffering from depression, aiming to foster empathy for those experiencing such situations.
"The Great Dilemma" is one of the most powerful songs on the album, blending progressive metal with other styles like rap, where synthesizer and guitar melodies take center stage. This intense track features an inspiring chorus in terms of melodies and musical arrangements. The great dilemma it explores is about individuals deciding to carve their own path in life, confronting or setting aside those who insist on telling them how to navigate their journey.
Next is "To Find the End," the softest track on the album, beginning with an acoustic guitar but transforming into one of the heaviest songs. This dynamic piece discusses the uncertainty surrounding death.
Continuing with "The Humanest," this song is the album's fictional narrative (though it may not be fiction in a few years). Fusing EDM with neoclassical metal, progressive, and hardcore, "The Humanest" narrates an unrequited love story between a machine (smartphone, computer, technology, etc.) and its user, who remains oblivious to the machine's romantic feelings. This desperation drives the machine to madness, yearning for its user's reciprocation.
"Deeper than the Deep" is a darker song with a simpler structure, yet surprises with djent-inspired sections. It tells the tale of a broken soul seeking to be reborn, longing for another chance at life.
Finally, "Cosmic Reverie" and "Cosmic Voyager" are the instrumental tracks that close the album. These pieces evoke a cosmic journey to an unknown destination, featuring sounds reminiscent of classic progressive rock and inspiring melodies. Delta concludes Gemini with an epic and emotional sound.
