Behind The Artworks: November Fire - Through A Mournful Song (2024)

All my life, I loved drawing. I used to draw mostly dinosaurs when I was a kid, then moved on to comic books when I got older. Terry (November Fire’s bass player and singer) lived next door to me and we spent a lot of time making our own comics. I loved art by Richard Corban, Bernie Wrightson, Derek Riggs, of course.

Although I am lucky enough to have a creative career, I didn’t make as much time to draw as I’d like. A few years ago, I got an iPad and Apple pencil and I started doing a lot of drawing again. It’s so easy to just pick up the tablet and start messing around.

Looking for inspiration for things to draw, I started making artwork for the six songs that ended up on Through A Mournful Song. One of these drawings was for our opening track, Wall Of Monsters. It’s about the massive divides people have nowadays, and a call to unify and tear down the wall these monsters of lies and division stand upon and guard.

I didn’t have a master plan or anything, I just started drawing some shapes that turned into monster heads, demons, arms emerged, wings, and an authoritative figure looming in the background. There is a looseness to the drawing, as I don’t usually get detailed in the lines but I think that adds to the creepy atmosphere of the drawing.

The band logo was drawn by Terry a long time ago, for a gig flyer, I was able to extract it in Adobe Illustrator and make a digital version. As a final touch, we decided to use a hand-written title instead of a font to give it a more personal look.
