Behind The Scenes: Phatt James - Quick To Notice (Official Video)
We released our album, "Just Begun," over a year ago, and we have since continued to add visuals to our music. This is our fourth music video and it’s an element that’s been a part of the process for us even as a small artist. “Quick to Notice” is a song that we knew would fit perfectly with our latest concept. It feels like the quintessential music video. Riding around in a nice car at sunset and hitting the beach. For me, it’s not only that though, it’s also a nod to the Red Hot Chili Peppers for their “Scar Tissue” video. The Chili Peppers have been a consistent influence in my life.
This video for "Quick to Notice" really unfolded in time. Our photographer and good friend Cam Cyr (@nocturnalresearch) and I were talking before a show about potential music video ideas and he mentioned having a classic car to take some photos and maybe shoot something in. I held this in the back of my mind as we finished the “Seven Days” video with Kicker Pictures. I thought maybe Kicker Pictures and Cam could come together to make a video with this car for “Quick to Notice.” I knew that Cam had a film style that we’d been excited about, alongside the confidence I already had in Kicker Pictures to make a great film. Thankfully they were both down to work together to make this masterpiece of the minds. I really appreciate them teaming up on our behalf.
After some conferences about the idea and getting the ball rolling, we planned to meet up in Milford, CT, over by Anchor Beach. A beautiful area with a perfect cruising road. When we arrived, it turned out that we had picked a spot where our drummer Chris’s aunt lived, so she ended up hosting us for the duration of the video, which was very Hollywood.
With car-mounted cameras and drones flying above us, the Phatt James boys drove around Milford for a couple hours and took over the beach. I have to say, I am so thankful to the residents for letting us get after it. We got a few cheers from passersby as well, which was nice.
This video concept is perfect for our song “Quick to Notice” because it is all about living in that cruising mentality. It’s about not getting too hung up on one thing and staying in the moment with as much positive momentum as you can believe. This video is also perfect for us as a band because we get to honor an influence, the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Connor from Kicker Pictures and I thought of some things to recreate from the RHCP video with our own spin on it, of course. One thing we really wanted to get was a shot of myself playing solo, similar to John Frusciante in the RHCP video. In the video, John is playing the slide guitar solo in this epic shot out in the desert with power lines behind him on a broken guitar. We wanted to capture the aura of that shot, and I feel we did with our version. I sat on the rocks with the ocean behind me and seagulls flying around and playing my slide. Coincidently, “Quick to Notice” also has a slide guitar part like “Scar Tissue.”
Other witless things we did, like wearing funny hats and upside-down sunglasses, were an ode to similar behavior in the RHCP video. I like to think pouring out my coffee cup is my version of John Frusciante walking his fingers across the sky.
We wrapped up the shoot with some shots playing our instruments sitting on the high wall next to the beach as the sun set. We did a couple more run-throughs playing the song and then we went to celebrate. We stopped at the spot down the road, had a few cheers, and now here we are with a new video for "Quick to Notice"!!
Something too good not to mention is the lengths to which Cam and Connor from Kicker Pictures went for this video. I’m talking about climbing on top of Cam’s moving car, hanging off the sides, and riding skateboards alongside and holding onto us. What a sight and what a memory.
