Interviews About Albums: Mourn The Light - The Magic Is Calling (2024)

In this new interview, we sat down with the American Doom Metal band Mourn The Light to ask questions about their album, "The Magic is Calling".

1. What can you say about The Magic is Calling?

The Magic is Calling is our new EP meant to bridge the gap between our last release and the next full length we are currently recording. We are also using this EP to introduce our new vocalist Andy Small to our fan base. It includes a brand new song "False Prophecies", a cover of Black Sabbath's "Headless Cross" and two of our older songs with Andy on vocals and the addition of keys by Autumn as well.

2. What is the meaning of the name The Magic is Calling?

The Magic is Calling is a line in our new song "False Prophecies" the music was written by me (Dwayne), but the lyrics were written by our former vocalist Andrew Stachelek and I just really thought it was a cool line. Kind of a very Dio kind of vibe to it.

3. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

"We are the Light" it is one of my favorite songs I've written and I really really love the way it came out.

4. Is there a special message in The Magic is Calling? If there is what is it?

The message is pretty much the same with everything that Mourn the Light does. Life is full of sadness, loss, pain, and tragedy, but life can be great also. We only get one shot at it, and try to make the best of it. Don't let shit destroy the beauty of it.

5. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

"We are the Light" was inspired by 80s movie soundtrack music. The lyrics are about heavy metal bringing the light back into your life when it feels like the darkness is taking over.

Just when you think it's lost
And it's over and done
Take a good look around
You're not the only one

The will to fight is almost gone
And you think there's no way to win
Then the radio starts playing your song
And just like that you're back in

You're not alone
Were all in this fight
It's a scary ride
Just hanging on to life

You're not alone
We're children of the night
It's hard to see in the dark
But we are the light

We can't hold on to the past
If we want to move forward
We have to live with the scars
And carry on
We gotta let go of the past
If we're going to move forward
If we want to be free
We must carry on

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thanks specially?

Musically my influences range from Prog to traditional metal, from Power metal to extreme metal to synthetic wave and goth rock and I don't shut any of that out when I'm writing. I write what I feel without trying to fit in a box. It all still ends up sounding like Mourn the Light.

8. Something to add?

We have a new full length being recorded now and would love to get it out this year and I'm already pretty deep into the writing for the next full length after this as well. Possibly might play around with another cover or 2 as the Headless Cross thing was fun to do. We plan to try and hit some cities we haven't hit yet with our live show. Excited about the future of Mourn the Light.
