Interviews: Rey Chocolate

On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Nu- Metal band Rey Chocolate from Chile. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you plan it or come out just like that?

The band name Rey Chocolate, came from local slang where chocolate means blood, so it represents the King of Blood. We really didn’t though it really, it's just from an anecdotic situation.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

It was the music we were listening to at the time we formed the band, so it was kind of natural for us. Even though we are normally associated with Nu-metal, we have a lot of different influences and genres in our music

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Some of us did, and some didn’t. At first, it began as a typical friends band, but as it began to get serious, we made some changes in the formation. For example, we did auditions for singers at some point and because of that, we met Ricardo. That being said, this was many years ago, so now we all are pretty close friends. We consider the band as a second family, and that is really important for us.

4. Each band member's favorite band?

Eugenio and Ricardo are fans of The Beatles, Francisco really likes Led Zeppelin, Lukas is a fan of Massive Attack, and Christian really likes David Bowie´s work. As you can see, a lot of oldies here Jajaja

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

We write about a lot of stuff, sometimes dark fiction from film directors like David Lynch, Alan Parker, and Ari Aster. Real-life stories too, of course. But our new record “Lid Matriz”, It’s more about problems we experience in our day-to-day life with politics corruption, and societal decay, just to name some.

6. Where was your last gig?

We headlined a benefit festival made for the family of a dear Rey Chocolate fan who recently passed away. We were deeply touched and the least we could do was to help her family with medical and burial expenses

7. Where would you like to act?

International metal festivals would be awesome, we are really working on getting our music spread worldwide, and of course, the UK is at the top of our list

8. Whom would you like to feature with?

There are a lot of great musicians out there but we could name some such as Trent Reznor, Chino Moreno, Mike Patton, Max Cavalera, Will Ramos, and Tatiana Shmaylyuk… this list could be endless

9. Whom not?

We are pretty open to collaborating. I think this has more to do with any person who goes against our principles and values. We certainly would NOT collaborate with pro-violence, homophobic, and racist people.

10. Have any of you ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Not really, but I think good advice is to try to not overthink it, and relax. just do what you know best and of course practice a lot!!!!

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

There are a lot of influences in our music so this is a difficult one. We could name bands like Sepultura, Ministry, Gojira, Spliknot, Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Melvins, Faith No More, Meshugga, etc

12. What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

To record our first release again! jajaja. At that time (2000) we had minimum resources and we had to work it out with what we had, I think that the engineer who worked at the studio didn’t really understand our music or what we wanted to achieve and the results could be a lot better jaja… ironically it´s one of our most successful albums, so we can live with that.

13. What do you think of your fans?

They are the best, we love them. They are really hardcore fans and the support we get from them is overwhelming

14. What do you think of our site?

It’s awesome! We really appreciate what you guys are doing for the metal community worldwide. Thanks a lot Breathing The Core for giving us the space and opportunity to participate from the other side of the planet

15 - Something to add?

Yes! To all metalheads around the globe. Support your local and favorite bands, go to concerts, and  buy their merch! As we all know (in the streaming era) it’s the only way to help bands to survive
