Behind The Scenes: The Disruptors - King Of The Push Away (Official Video)

I’m excited about the release of The Disruptors’ new video “King of the Push Away.” It captures well the alone-ness that can result from consistently disregarding those who try to get close to you. Personally, it’s taken me years to learn to be more present for – and appreciative of – the important people in my life. 19th and 7th's Art Director, Paul Motisi, dedicated a bunch of time and many iterations to get the video in final form and I think he knocked it out of the park, particularly how it captures the theme of isolation as a result of rejected connections. I also love the way it tells a full story spanning many years in just three-and-a-half minutes!

The video tells the intertwined stories of three characters: a high school prom queen and king as well as a classmate who is a budding artist. The young woman not only rejects her "king" but also several other men who she feels don't meet her high standards. As time passes, potential suitors stop calling and she's left very much alone and jaded. The rejected prom king sequesters himself in the gym as a means to compensate for his loss at the expense of friends and social life. A serious injury from working out leaves him hobbled and dejected. Their classmate shuns those who take an interest in his art. He, too, ends up isolated. The closing scene flashes forward a few decades as the two men arrive separately at a bar where the former prom queen has been bartending for quite some time. There is surprised recognition not only of one another but of the passage of time, the many lost and lonely years caused by each of their lack of appreciation of people who have tried to get close to them. Perhaps there's a lesson for us all in there somewhere...
