Interviews: Revolution Rabbit Deluxe

On this new occasion, we had the opportunity to interview the Heavy Metal band Revolution Rabbit Deluxe from the UK. Check out the interview and follow the band on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or did it just come out like that?

Rev Rabbit: I was toying with the idea of a band name while driving locally. I've always loved rabbits so I knew rabbits needed to be in the name. I had this image of the famous black and white icon of revolutionary leader, Che Guevara, replaced with a rabbit's face, which made me laugh, so it became Revolution Rabbit. I added the Deluxe later as the cherry on top.

2. Why did you want to play this genre?

Rev Rabbit: I'm a huge fan of alt-rock and love the freedom it gives you to explore other forms and genres. I am generally a very angsty person, so the spikiness of the lyrics are generally complimented by the aggression and angular music structures.

Max: I've been into alternative rock since my high school days. I also have a love of metal, hardcore punk, a lot of really old-school blues/jazz, Motown, classical and folk, and all of these have melded into a weird combination of influences for the music I grew up learning to play and translate very differently into what I play these days. But alt-rock/post punk has always been the most effective means of creative expression for me.

3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?

Rev Rabbit: We rescued Max (Lead Guitar) from a inflatable that had drifted from shore. She was singing "Where is my Mind?" by the Pixies at the time, so I forced her to learn lead guitar just to fit into the band. Lee (Drums) we found hitchhiking and Tim (Bass) we picked up on an eBay auction. I'm still waiting for my refund.

4. Each band member favourite band?

Rev Rabbit: The Beatles

Lee: Foo Fighters

Max: Pixies, Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Sleater-Kinney, L7, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, and lots of other stuff

Tim: Mogwai: Post rock titans conjuring epic soundscapes of feedback and beautiful melody’s. If you haven’t been to see them live I urge you to do so, possibly with ear protection.

5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?

Rev Rabbit: Social inequalities: local, national, global. Idiot billionaires like Tim Gurner telling people on the poverty line how to live their lives. Anger with the status quo.

Max: This strange, messed up world we live in. And the frailty of human existence.

6. Where was your last gig?

Rev Rabbit: The Duke in Neath - An awesome retro bar that we just love. Dark, dingy, and delightful.

Max: It's like the Mos Eisley Cantina from Star Wars but with worse lighting and better music.

7. Where would you like to play?

Rev Rabbit: Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff. The Marrs Bar, Shrewsbury.

Tim: CBGBs. I went there in 2004 and watched the most amazing punk band lead by their frontman/ trombonist Johnny Fucker. The energy and surroundings were amazing and it basically set the standard for all small venue gigs that I go to. Unfortunately CBGBs closed in 2006, so I’ll never actually get to play there, which is disappointing to say the least. So I’ll go for Clwb Ifor Bach which is my favourite Cardiff venue.

Lee: I would've loved to play Boggies if it was still around.

Max: The ISS Station or the specific location in the Namib desert where "Africa" by Toto is playing on a never-ending loop

8. Who would you like to support?

Rev Rabbit: The Pixies or Feeder. We adore both those bands.

9. Who not?

Rev Rabbit: Coldplay, Billie Eilish, Bach, Status Quo. No common ground.

10. Have any of you has ever suffered from stage fright? Any tips for beginners on how to beat that?

Rev Rabbit: I always get stage fright. I think its a good thing because it keeps you humble and focussed. The only way to beat it is to fake it 'til you make it. Practice boldness on stage.

Lee: I think everyone feels self conscious and judged by others so the key is to try and move your mind away from that by developing confidence in your playing and most of all enjoying playing music and performing for people's pleasure

Tim: A bit of nervous energy gives you that boost when you’re on stage and makes sure that you are not getting complacent. Enjoy it, remember that the audience is with you and wants you to perform well, and don’t make prolonged eye contact with that weird guy standing at the bar. You know the one I mean…

Max: The key thing is to practice, practice, practice. And pretend nobody else is there. I often just try and imagine it's just the four of us in the room just like when we have our rehearsal sessions.

Rev Rabbit: Tim is talking about me, maybe?

11. What bands have inspired you the most?

Rev Rabbit: The Beatles for their melodies. Feeder, Smashing Pumpkins, Pixies for their alt rock sensibilities. Billy Bragg and Andy Partridge of XTC for lyrical twists.

Tim: Joy Division/ New Order, Hookie is the man when it comes to bass!

Lee: Chad Smith & Dave Grohl on drums. Travis Barker too, love American pop punk. Grew up with Maiden/Metallica. Love Live after Death & Ride the Lightning.

12. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever asked you for?

Rev Rabbit: I was asked for a pair of my underpants but was too embarrassed to admit I wasn't wearing any.

Max: To stop talking and just play.

13. What do you think of your fans?

Rev Rabbit: I owe a huge debt to anyone that listens to our music. If they like it, even better. :)

14. What do you think of our site?

Rev Rabbit: It looks good. Wasn't aware of you guys until the interview but any music site that has over 5 Million views is doing something right. Will be back.

15. Something to add?

Rev Rabbit: We are open to contact. In fact, we love contact with others. We are pretty active and always respond.
