Deep River Acolytes - Procession Of The Damned (2024)

Deep River Acolytes: Procession of The Damned track-by-track breakdown by A. Rajaniemi

"They Told Their Secrets In Dreams" had been lying around for years and it was missing a chorus part. When the chorus with vocal melodies was added it was an instant hit. We have some Lovecraft-inspired lyrics and this is one of them. There's quite a lot happening in this song and it's not boring to play. Always someone fucking up something haha. It also has a thrilling growing feel throughout the song.

"Rimes For The Vultures" is probably the newest of these songs. Not really rehearse before the recording so we didn't know how it would turn out with Jo-ey's emotive vocals and all but now we know! Lyrics are about a person having some mental challenges. This song surely has some rough and melodic epicness.

"The Quarry" was not even meant to be a DRA song (or a song at all) but I just had been fucking around with the idea of a simple haunting blues thing and when re-visiting the old quarry near my childhood home I came up with the lyrics and that "radio voice" idea. Spooky UFO-blues.

"Maze of Deceit" is a rocker with a faithnomorish part and some kingdiamondish vibes among other things. I am not sure what the lyrics are about, maybe accepting your inner beast or something. And there is some U2 abuse there!

"Under The Freezing Moon" is a nice, empowering song. You gonna die anyway so no need to rush it. Just appreciate the possibility of jumping from the dam of Merikoski power plant. The title of the song is of course blasphemously irritating for true black metal guys like ourselves.

The name "Procession of the Damned" is a term by author Charles Fort meaning the outmarch of data that science has excluded (ghosts, ufos, etc.). Lyrics on the EP deal with these kinds of stranger things doing cameos in the world we experience. In the cover art by Pedro Ruotsalainen we are watching from some protoplasm and waiting to evolve and be born in this form to this fucked up reality. Damned from the start. Or at least that's how I see it.
