Track By Tracks: Weeping Sequence - Thrive On Illusion (2024)
1. Ellipsis:
In Greek, the concept of “Ellipsis” means “not having something”. It’s a feeling that can be triggered by absence if we look at it in a more poetic way. It also relates to the three dots (…) we use in writing to create a sense of pause or something left unsaid…
2. Under all silences:
Inspired by a poem by E.E. Cummings, this title reflects secrets, unspoken words, and unexpressed feelings. It represents all the things each of us buries deep inside. I needed here an atmospheric mood where all these emotions coexist and react to each other. I tried to express this vibe by using strings (violin/cello) in a continuous and intense way.
3. Void A:
While working on the album, I was also reading a book about the secrets of space -black holes, spacetime paradoxes, and the cosmic void. That last one fascinated me the most because it was so difficult to understand and conceive. In other words, it is the perfect material for creating music! I approached this concept with repetitive minimalist patterns, samples, and short-string themes. A musical hypothesis, if you will, about what might be hidden within the cosmic VOID A.
4. Pleasures of the defeated:
This is about defeat and how to deal with it—a philosophical view on loss. How does someone recover after being defeated? How do they prepare for the next battle after losing the previous one? What have they learned from failure? It’s the most low-profile track on the album, the most elegiac, with long, flowing melodies from violin and cello. A musical background for someone to reflect and search for answers to these questions.
5. Triptych:
The title here is initially related to the structure of the piece— a powerful opening, a calm interlude, and a dramatic crescendo to finish. It’s a musical composition divided into three parts. But I also see another, more symbolic meaning: something essential, something deeply important, embraced and protected by the other two parts…
6. The disquieting muses:
The title is inspired by Giorgio de Chirico’s painting of the same name, created between 1916 and 1918. In this piece, I tried to translate into music the emotions evoked by the painting. Chirico’s work has elements of surrealism, industrial details, and a unique interpretation of the concept of the Muses. Of course, the meaning of the painting varies depending on the viewer’s perspective. Musically, this track is among the most experimental on the album, with distorted operatic vocals representing the concept of the "disquieting muses" as I imagined them.
