Band Biographies: Noumenia

Noumenia is a post-groove metal band from Northern Italy who have crafted an explosive soul-striking sound that hits you square in the face, the mind, the heart, and the spine. Formed in late 2018, Noumenia first consisted of: Matteo Campagnoli (bass), Matteo Radaelli (guitar), and Samuele Zichi (drums), altogether a more instrumental project that was finally realized in terms of overall sound and theme with the addition of Vivian Nigro (vocals). Through a developmental period, the band began their journey of discovery and experimentation, recording, playing shows, and winning the “Alcolicontest” (2023), while romancing different styles and flirting with genre until they cemented their sound with the construction of their exciting debut album titled Echoes, with Richard Meiz of Lacuna Coil, assisting with production.

The result was and is a powerful album that hits hard and fast, featuring buzzsaw vocals that explore a myriad of textures and tones, an addictive groove vibe that lifts audience members out of their seats, and a guitar sound so rich and so full, it seems they have reinvented the power chord. In terms of message and theme, it seems that some bands use lyrics almost like a phonetic code that would merely “dress up the rhythm” as opposed to creating poetry that would stand the test of time. In Echoes, there is no such effort to use words as support mechanisms, bench players, and understudies. In a savage blast, this band rips the skin off the fruit straight to the juice, to the epic dark groove with a warning label, claiming they will jump into the shadows, raise demons, fight giants, and get dirty in the ditch while talking about the raw and the real.

As far as the focus tracks, “The Circle” offers us a clever spin on the idea that “what comes around, goes around,” unloading a brilliant hybrid of funk and crunch, slinging along that groove with a guitar sound heavy as a nuclear bomb. The second focus track, titled “Fall Apart,” features an introduction of gentle waves born of lovely traditional vocals slowly building, swirling, leading to a massive punch in the plaster, saying, “Unbind the rope that chokes your heart.” The third focus track is “Black Ocean,” coming in with a futuristic horror feel, leading to the idea that all of our systems are crashing and burning. The band celebrates the darkness of their forecast with their prophecy, “Deep I sink, deep I drown,” yet cryptically, they unveil a sunray of hope by suggesting it is best to, “Stay with me ‘til the sun kisses the horizon / Sail with me through the waves of infinity.” This record is about the paradoxical power of conjoining anger with empathy, despair with hope, desolation with trust, and emptiness with the heartbeat of spirit. Sometimes, we make it. Other times we fall. Noumenia suggests that whether we bask in the sunlight or plunge down into the abyss, we do it with passion and verve! Echoes was mixed and mastered by Daniele Salomone (Inverno), produced by Richard Meiz (Lacuna Coil), and is scheduled to be released by Eclipse Records on June 27, 2025.
