Behind The Scenes: Mary Was A Machine - About You, About Me (feat. Crosslane) (Official Video)
Before Mary Was a Machine came to life, Daniel and Hakem had started a more metalcore-driven project with other friends—one that never saw the light of day. However, the intro and chorus of About You, About Me originated from a demo of that very project. The emotional weight of the song was too strong to let it go unheard, so we decided to reshape it, giving it a fresh, emo-infused identity.
We reworked the structure by softening the verses, creating a unique and engaging breakdown, and carefully crafting every layer to enhance the song’s depth. Carlo took the lead in shaping the verse sections, where the bass plays a key role, while Boga and Claudio enriched the overall sound with shimmering, atmospheric textures. Nick delivered a precise and dynamic drum performance, seamlessly shifting between post-hardcore, alternative rock, and a stadium-sized breakdown.
In production, we knew we wanted the vocals to be shared, so we invited Ale from Crosslane—our longtime friends and tourmates—to be part of the song. Daniel also added piano and synth sections, while our sound designer Stead crafted electronic textures that brought everything together. Finally, with the punchy and powerful production by Jarno at Theorem Studio, About You, About Me was fully realized.
The song dives into the pain of deception and emotional manipulation, reflecting on how feelings can be twisted to control and diminish someone. Just like all of our songs, it stems from personal experiences, but we shaped it with a universal narrative—one that allows listeners to see their own stories reflected in the lyrics and music.
The video, directed by the incredibly talented Mattia Castiglia, continues our visual theme by once again featuring a nun—this time holding and interacting with a mirror. We chose to focus on Hakem and Ale alongside the woman in the video, emphasizing the intimacy of the title: You and Me. The entire narrative unfolds through the reflection in the mirror, a symbol of self-confrontation, perception, and the blurred lines between truth and deception.
This is just another chapter in the journey we’re building, and we can’t wait for you to experience what’s coming next. Stay with us.
