Behind The Tracks: Ritual Effect - Blindside (Single) (2025)

This song was born out of a live rehearsal. We record most of our jams and thankfully we caught this one. The main riff came out of nowhere and evolved quickly into a few other riffs, all of which ended up on Blindside. It's our favourite way to write, going into the jam room with a blank canvas and letting the magic happen. After a few tweaks and edits, we had the whole song structure written and ready for lyrics. This song carries one of the signature traits of a Ritual Effect jam - a catchy heavy riff that's been interpreted differently between the three of us, resulting in a very fun piece of music.

 

Lyrically, I wanted to capture the feeling of loss and pulling yourself out from under the emotional blanket that comes with such an event. I had been going through this at the time and after the music for Blindside had come together, I knew straight away that this was the song to spill these words on to. The lyrics came together as quickly as the music and a week later we gave the song it's live debut. The reception was incredible. It felt like a new chapter had begun for us, and Blindside has been in every one of our set lists ever since.

 

We recorded and produced the song at Trackmix Studio with Michael Richards. We went through quite a few amps and pedals before we landed on the right sound but it was worth the effort. It's always difficult to walk away from the mixing desk without feeling like there's still something left to record or change, but with Blindside, everything feels like it is where it should be.
