The song had two bases in its message. It is a fictional one about a wandering soul between dimensions - not fully aware of where it is. But originally the subject itself came from "Operation Wandering Soul". It was a propaganda and psychological campaign conducted by American forces during the Vietnam War.

It involved the use of Vietnamese cultural beliefs and rituals regarding respect for the dead. According to Vietnamese tradition, the soul of the deceased must be buried in its homeland, otherwise it will wander aimlessly on earth, experiencing pain and suffering. Such a soul is called a "wandering soul" and is the equivalent of a ghost or a specter. The Vietnamese honor the souls of the dead. The Americans decided to use this belief to their advantage and tried to discourage Viet Cong soldiers from fighting by playing recordings of the voices of their fallen comrades.
