Interviews About Albums: DodenGod - Heralds Of A Dying Age (2025)

In this new interview, we sat down with the Belgian Death Metal band DodenGod to ask questions about their album, "Heralds Of A Dying Age".

1. What can you say about this new EP/CD?

First of al,l we’re really happy to work with Adrian and Pest Records and that they released the album, because the tracks were finished already a while ago.

We try to combine different metal styles in our music and I think with “Heralds of a Dying Age” we succeed.

YvS is really good at creating slow to mid-tempo (doom) riffs, influenced by bands like Asphyx, Bolt Thrower, and others and that works really well with the heavy growls of SvN. But he also listens to bands like Necrophobic or Nordjevel for example. I am more black metal orientated but grew up with bands like Morbid Angel, Sinister, etc so Dodengod is still much more death metal than black metal.

2. What is the meaning of the EP/CD name?

The meaning is, that we are at the end of our civilization. These songs are the heralds.

3. Which one is the composer of the CD/EP?

We all do our parts. YvS lays the foundation of the songs. He starts with some riffs, puts them in the right order, and then adds some keyboards. As I am living far away from the rest of the band, he mails me the tracks and I put my drum parts on top.

After trying different rhythms, breaks and arrangements (and messing around,) and once we’re satisfied, we send the guitar and drum files to SvN. He puts the vocals in, adds the finishing touches to the tracks and also takes care of the complete mix and mastering. So yeah, great teamwork.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

Hard to say, but I think I would pick out “The Grinder Feeds on Hate” because it has all the ingredients a Dodengod song should have: fast parts, head-banging mid-tempo riffs, and brutal vocals.

5. Is there a special message in this EP/CD? If there is what is it?

There is not really one specific message, but with Dodengod we want to create a dark and gloomy atmosphere, which is already reflected in the artwork of our first album. “Heralds” continues in that direction but is a bit more orientated around the topicsof  death, decay and all that lies around.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

Everyone should interpret the lyrics in their own way. You can find the lyrics of “The Grinder Feeds on Hate” below the YouTube video of Loud Rage Music.

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?

Personally, I didn’t have any specific band or album in mind during the recording process. The three of us are “metal veterans.” We all discovered metal in the late eighties and have a bit of the same background. YvS is more death-doom oriented, I am more into black metal and SvN combines those (extreme) metal genres with listening to other stuff, such as dark industrial for example. We try to combine those styles in our music. As I already mentioned at the beginning of this interview: We are really happy with the cooperation of Pest Records and the amount of promotion they make.

8. Something to add?

Thanks a lot for this interview and for spreading the band name. We have already quite some new material and also re-recorded 5 old tracks (pre “Salvation”) so we really keep things going!
