Interviews About Albums: DRUNKEN CROCODILES - Aegony (2025)

In this new interview, we sat down with the Italian Sludge Metal band DRUNKEN CROCODILES to ask questions about their album, "Aegony".

1. What can you say about "Aegony"?

It is the juice of this new journey, I'm very happy because it's a new road, started by new musicians. With the old line-up I had a more massive, angry and "monothematic" sound. After the line-up change in 2020, the new guitarist and the new drummer brought their style and their vision, which inevitably influenced mine. I discovered new ways of transmitting emotions, different ways from the simple "energy shot in the face without respite". AEgony is the fruit of this new way. A deeper, more intimate, more dreamlike and varied environment.

2. What is the meaning of the "Aegony" name?

Aegony is a concept album, it's a concept that has as its focal point the EGO, and in detail, how we are "probably using the power of our ego in the wrong way". We have a vision of our I, that leads us to try to prevail over other people, to defeat them, to steal, to take everything that can be useful only to ME. This mood has always led us to the wars, to the wickedness, to clashes, to the pure egoism, our evolution is based only on individualism. And all of this brings us to agony. let's just think about how beautiful the world could be if the power of the ego, the power of self-improvement, were at the service of the whole community. We could grow in harmony with the people next to us, with the animal next to us, with the nature next to us. An ego that leads us to grow, but at the service of the evolution in itself.

3. Which one is the composer of the "Aegony"?

The basic musical idea usually comes from Federico (guitar). Then we all work together on the drafting, the improvement, the composition. Then I usually take care of the vocal lines and the lyrics. But anyway, we generally work all 3 together.

4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?

It's hard to say because they're all 6 very different from each other, each song evokes different emotions and has a different urge. Let's say I'd choose LE DIVIN MARQUIS, because it's probably the most "catchy and complete", so that would be the one I'd probably recommend someone to listen to to get an idea of ​​who Drunken Crocodiles are.

5. Is there a special message in "Aegony"? If there is what it is?

Yes, of Course, like I explained before, and as the title itself says. AEgony is an invitation to think that perhaps we're not fully using our potential as human beings. And that we could have other ways to take to improve ourselves.

6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?

I'm honestly satisfied with all the lyrics I wrote. I like them all, each one has its own specific meaning while still being intertwined with the meaning of the whole album. You can find them online, and they're also written on the physical album. I invite you to read them if you want. 

7. Which inspirations have been important for this album? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank specially?

To be honest, there was no particular inspiration. It came out in a very genuine and automatic way. As I said, the new musicians brought their ideas, and by comparing all 3 of us, AEgony came out in a very deep and fluid way. Without any particular inspiration, except, of course, the fundamental concept of ego. We only let flow what happened to our mind and hands.
