Interviews About Albums: Void King - The Hidden Hymnal - Chapter II (2025)
In this new interview, we sat down with the American Stoner Metal/Doom Metal band Void King to ask questions about their album, "The Hidden Hymnal - Chapter II".
1. What can you say about The Hidden Hymnal - Chapter II?
This is a concept record about the multiverse, where our lives go when they are extinguished, and the existential dread that comes from learning this information. This is something of a departure for us, as far as the way it was written, but we feel like we have really encompassed the Void King sound and captured what we were trying to go for here.
2. What is the meaning of the album name?
THH part 1 was a loose collection of songs that stood on their own. Part 2 is the story being told that most people aren't aware of.
3. Which one is the composer of The Hidden Hymnal - Chapter II?
We write virtually everything as a band. So while Tommy came up with the idea for the story, we all played an equal role in writing the record. The best part about this band is the collaborative nature of how things are done. Some of the songs were literally written around drum parts that we loved very much. Some of the songs were written on a computer by our bass player, Chris, and worked on that way. And some of them spawned from open jams.
4. If you had to pick one song, which one would you pick?
Personally, I think that "A Union of Expired Souls" really stands out for me. It's a song in two parts. It's long. And most of all, it ends with the heaviest stuff we have ever done.
5. Is there a special message in this album? If there is what it is?
There's no message, so to speak. This is a record inspired by a sleep terror that I had, with lyrics written based on a story I wrote out. If there is a message hidden in there somewhere, it's that nothing is permanent. Nothing lasts forever. Everything dies.
6. Are there some lyrics that you'd love to share?
"It takes a life time to be reborn." I feel like that sums up the record pretty well.
7. Which inspirations have been important for The Hidden Hymnal - Chapter II? Like musically or friends, family, someone you'd love to thank especially?
Ultimately, we have to thank the people who have been around with us for a decade or so. There are lots of folks who show lots of love every time we release music, or a shirt, or whatever. I think it is incredible that so many people connect with our tunes. That is the entire goal.
8. Something to add?
Make sure you preorder the record on bandcamp. tell your friend. We hope to see everyone on the road soon! Thank you.
